Zelenica-Zelenjak(2024)-Ljubeljščica Ridge-Ljubelj

Today's original goal got a correction already in the car. Why back from Zelenjak along the ski slope, when the Ljubeljščica ridge is more interesting? Although in crowded Karavanke, the whole path only follows markings for 15 minutes, the rest are unmarked paths. From Ljubelj parking first along the road under the chairlift, but only to the top of the first climb. Then to the right we spot the start of a nice hunting path, which brings us through the shade to Zelenica Hut (open). Only 15 minutes along the marked path towards Vrtača, then a path branches off to the right, which is well visible, now also well marked by someone . The path then runs through Ruševje cirque, at the end across scree. We ascend to Zelenjak from its left edge, 10 minutes of pleasant scrambling await us. If desired, we can also climb the neighboring Palec, it is not far. Return over scree, I skip the ridge at Moži this time. Traverse as far as it goes, then return to the marked path for five minutes and along the supply path to the top of the ski slope, to the ridge. There the only direction sign awaits us, then a good hour of various things. Mostly crumbly and narrow ridge, some meadows and almost Dolomitic views, and a chimney or two with real cables. Not for a hiker who loves wide and completely safe paths. Towards the end we can climb to Polna peč (1520) in a minute, then through high greenery but on a nice little path to the old border crossing and Ljubelj Hut. Closed today . Except one, nobody on the whole path. Then down the road to the quite full parking. Good 5 hours and less than 1300m elevation gain, ideal weather and excellent company, of course.

I remembered your adventure when I was walking there, yeah. In summer it's of course a bit different. The whole little valley is interesting, though it doesn't have great extent, surprisingly quite solitary too. Don't know what you're waiting for with the whole ridge? Already sitting in the car?

These days it's (also for me) quite too hot... but I agree... great hikes - practically all bypassing crowds - can be done in the described areas... both in summer and winter

This path along the ridge from the Ljubelj hut to Triangel is nice and interesting (nice description above),... here we descended to the marked path intending to visit Palec or Zelenjak or both..., but strange clouds interrupted the plan, they started threatening, even some drops fell..., so we turned towards the Zelenica hut for the promised p..., my better half was celebrating,... damn, already 108 together,... the weather cleared up again, but we no longer stuck to the plan,... celebration is celebration

Promising clouds grazed all around peaks, on Zelenjak, Palec and Polna peč they spared a bit. No glaring sun, not hot either. Path today from parking via Zelenica first to Zelenjak, then Palec, then Ljubeljščica ridge to Polna peč, and finally well-deserved coffee at Ljubelj hut. How it fitted... Path without crowds, without issues, only ridge path each time bit different, erosion does its. On ridge apparently many snakes, three showed up. Admit, I was faster at dodging.

Can someone tell me if in the Zelenica area, on the path to Stol and Vrtača, there is some water source, stream or similar? We're going up this weekend, larger group, so if not really necessary, don't want to carry 4-5 liters of water each. Thanks in advance and best regards to all...

Almost every year I visit Ljubeljščica, the ridge between the two huts, so to speak. Between Ljubelj one and that at Zelenica. This time no extension to Zelenjak or Palec, but we stepped on Triangel aka Spodnji Plot (what a name for a mountain...). Start is on the road right before Ljubelj tunnel. First need less than an hour on old road, but not too hard. Hut at Ljubelj was open, drank excellent coffee in pleasant space where fireplace burned and waited for fog to go elsewhere. Behind hut is junction to Polna peč and soon back on path. Ridge is pleasantly demanding, in this direction steepest descent from tower, also some quite narrow passages. After exit to Zelenica side, path to Triangel branches, dropping vertically above Zelenica hut. We sit in lee warm sun, then descend to hut for really long break. Shame to go home in such weather. Return via hunting trail, so today except road didn't step on marked path at all. Autumn colored day, feeling not at all.

This little ridge has tempted me for some time. I hiked it yesterday with constant fear fog would swallow me, but it didn't, only badly limited my views and vistas. Otherwise short and sweet, I'll repeat in sunshine and add Palec and Zelenjak.
