Yesterday (Thursday, March 18) with skis across Zelenica and Dry Rubble to the saddle below Vrtača and back. Nothing new about Zelenica if I say it's all around snow-covered like in the middle of the worst winter. On the narrow traverse to Dry Rubble it was frozen for skins, which I took off right after. Continued on the touring track, locally punctured by walkers to the end of the slope under Zelenjak. Strongly frozen slope below the saddle, where no track was visible, required skins again. Descent was all sorts. Started on frozen slabs in the upper part, interrupted by patches of wind-blown snow, sometimes crusted. Lower, in one or two slightly shadier spots, some dry unbonded snow for a couple turns, which I made with pleasure. Avoided the traverse and went straight down through the forest to the valley above Mrzli Studenec. There the challenge was skiing in areas of excellent settled dry snow on shady sides of spruces. After one or two turns, I eagerly awaited the third and fourth, but on the sunny side of the spruce, hard crust or even frozen snow always waited miserably. In short, usual rodeo, with one nastier close encounter with hard ground . The real opposite was the descent from the upper station across the avalanche. Fantastic! Dry, bonded but rarely icy snow was skiable like seldom. Below the middle station it was somewhat southern, could ski almost to the lower station. Weather, like the day before, changeable to perfection. Start sunny, later high clouds, in Dry Rubble cold wind, diffuse light, then sun again, when at the car it started snowing. Prep for April, of course. Folk fun music from Zelenica absent this time. One hiker in one Vrtača gully, two skiers in another, one hiker in the third. Two on Palec too, and some more tourers joined. And one dog urging the master with loud barking to hurry up. Haha! Actually just the right number of visitors, pleasant for me.
