First time with brother-in-law on tour, also first time for Miha. Up to top of Zelenica via ski slope, then right into forest at sign Vrtača, Stol. Path through forest also suitable for on foot (Miha), for ski touring skins would be handy again. Then to top of Dry Rubble in sunny weather slightly spoiled by approaching clouds. Hard base at start, then some powder. We skied nicely through forest too, just struggled a bit at end and descended with anchors. Then down ski slope. Ideal conditions. Begunjščica besieged from all sides, same for Dry Rubble and Central Gully on Vrtača. Strongly recommend. More http://lukazoja.blogspot.com

I was in Suho ruševje just before holidays in fairy-tale conditions among the first. Behind us then a procession of pilgrims into the mountains poured in. But we went to Palec. On ascent we hit a 5m high rock jump over which we climbed with a bit more caution. Some protection wouldn't hurt either : http://bojanambrozic.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!ACD975034630F7FE!7943.entry

Today I went with my partner to feel (literally) Zelenjak and Palec. Goal only to Žleb, paths to both peaks I just checked out. I think both are quite respectable, no markings, no fixed protection etc. Met no living soul. About planika- no trace.. Back via scree, which turned out faster. At Zelenica friendly.

On Palec I've been twice, Zelenica still awaits me. They say it's somewhat flat crumbly. Interesting heights of these two peaks. Palec as higher 2026m, Zelenica (Zelenjak) 2024m. Always argued which is higher. According to Geopedija PZS height map Zelenica leads with 1973m, Palec 1967m, actually much lower than marks on maps.

Well, interesting..(about heights) Then Žleb not at 1916 either. Zelenjak is indeed crumbly. Some rock stays in hand etc.. Still tempted me, but since better half waiting at Žleb, seemed too risky to rush, so said wait for next time.. Or not.. Otherwise path to Palec seemed crumbly too (above first gully), debris etc. Interesting as they pose certain challenge. For experienced probably nothing serious. (Once saw comment that medium difficult uninsured path can be bigger deal than e.g. harder insured). Possible.. If or when I go there, I'll take time.

On Palec and Zelenjak I've been many times, always to both summits and always in dry conditions. Path to Palec in my opinion somewhat easier than to Zelenjak, which in first half ascent from saddle somewhat more crumbly and for some maybe even bit exposed. Still Heinz boldly on way, surely you'll make it. As for peak heights, real confusion. Zelenjak 2028m-at least so written on top. Anyway not important. I don't worry about height meters, but go to mountains for quite other reasons..

Yes, thanks. Next time surely. Today was feeling (not goal). Otherwise think slowly gets far. You're right about worrying over meters (not thing of true mountaineers). Good luck!

Long awaited trip to Suho ruševje finally got its epilogue today. Kopen Ljubelj, midway lower draglift on skis, above middle chairlift station then with Franci we put on skins. The ascent itself continued on ski slope which was windblown, hard, frozen and of course torn up from previous days when thaw ruled around here. View into Šentanski gully gave immediate decision to cancel Begunjščica today due to torn terrain and more avalanche debris in it. This was confirmed by an acquaintance who skied down from Central gully and said conditions are the same there. Quick decision to go to Suho ruševje. Top of Zelenica, traverse right and entry into cirque, along which we advance quickly as snow is hard and frozen. Light snow spindrift accompanies us all the way. We finish ascent at ca 2000m, on ridge between Vrtača and Zelenjak. Quickly start descent as fog rolls towards ridge at high speed. Descent on very frozen and torn terrain went nicely, bit more traversing, descent to Smokuška planina, then again "skating" to top Zelenica and same terrain in heavy snowfall towards Ljubelj. Given frozen snow, the trip with winter gear is also suitable for hikers. LP Andrej

Hi Saw you from Begunjščica. I with buddy ascended Šentanski gully. Šentanec was full of triggered avalanches and very icy, so without crampons and ice axe no go. On Begunjščica ridge it blew very strongly, almost knocked us off balance several times. Aware of bad weather we started very early and snowfall caught us on way back at Born tunnels.

Ljubelj-Zelenica-Suho ruševje-Žleb This time we went to check snow conditions in Suho Ruševje. Of course too little snow for nice skiing, mostly windblown loose, or scoured to ice base or even to rocks. Very windy, at top of saddle (Žleb) so much that I could hardly stand upright so with husband quickly skied off saddle. Of course skiing not the nicest due to various snow sorts (windpacked or scoured to hard base). But sun was there.

Enough of cold, need vitamin D and so we end up at Ljubelj. Meet tons of people, hikers, tourers, families with sleds... Most stop at Zelenica, at the hut, Triangel is well skied, up and down Šentanc also many mountaineers, most I think in the central on Begunjščica. Never seen such crowds in that gully!! We go on, check conditions under Vrtača. Track nicely set, also walkable, cross some avalanche debris, my faithful buddy breaks through a few times, nothing special, easier on skis. In Dry Rubble snow harder, so I skin alone to saddle, check gully to Austria where I see three skiers, looks solid. Some ski from under central gully on Vrtača, think they didn't reach top. Ski back, snow crusted where sun hits, hard under wall, so solid skiing. Turn to Šentanc, but unpleasant crust there. Nice long day in sun..

Today with friend despite level three warning for Zelenica area went under Palec and found warning not justified, as seen from pics. Worries me a bit, because next time conditions maybe serious and we won't believe. Ended at saddle under Palec, as very windy and no temptation to continue. Ski back pure enjoyment to bottom. LP

Main danger is above cargo road.

...but judging by the foot traffic, most people still don't know despite the warning signs and the burnt candle on the tree

I don't understand this report anyway. What's the problem now? That you weren't swept away by an avalanche?! I'm more worried that people despite constant warnings of high avalanche danger after snowfall still rush into the mountains to "check" if the warning is justified. Anyway, each according to their own conscience.

Those rounded up warnings bring calm, as long as it's level 3 most don't go, real situation maybe closer to level 2, but it changes day by day that's the point.

Today Gregor and I went to the Gully. The goal was actually Palec, but we started quite late, so after 12 on the way to Palec it was heavily tracked, steps were breaking through, snow was crumbling, so we decided to turn back. Weather was great, maybe a bit too warm for this time, as the thermometer at Vrtača Hut on return showed almost 20 degrees. In short, a very nice day in the mountains, Palec waits for better conditions . More in photos.
