Access to starting point:
We drive to Mojstrana, then follow the signs for Vrata Valley. We continue along the toll road, which is closed to public traffic in winter, following it to the large parking lot located a few minutes before Aljažev dom v Vratih.
Path description:
From the parking lot we continue along the gravel road closed to public traffic, along which past Šlajmerjev dom we quickly reach Aljažev dom v Vratih.
We bypass Aljažev dom on the right side and continue straight with the path in the direction of Triglav, Sovatna, Luknja... (right Škrlatica, bivouac on Rušje...). We continue the path on a worse gravel road that takes us past the winter room to a marked junction at the famous peg (monument to fallen partisan climbers).
We continue straight again (left Tominškova path) as a gentle path leads us with beautiful views of Triglav and the Triglav North Face. After a few minutes of further walking we reach a beech forest, where the path over Sovatna branches off to the right, and we continue straight in the direction of Luknja and Triglav - the path over Prag. A short ascent on a cart track follows, then the markers direct us left onto the path that approaches the bed of Triglavska Bistrica. Here the path takes us past the memorial to mountain victims, a little further on we reach the next marked junction.
Straight ahead the path continues towards Luknja, but we continue left in the direction of the path over Prag, where the path first leads us across the Triglavska Bistrica stream (slightly higher is the source of Bistrica).
On the other side of the stream we quickly reach the first steep section, where the first pegs assist us, after a few minutes the difficulty of the path eases, and we continue to ascend steeply, with increasingly beautiful views of the other side of the valley opening from the path.
This section of the path is partly overgrown with brushwood, higher up safety equipment reappears and soon we reach probably the most difficult part on the path over Prag, where with the help of brackets and cables we climb up a nearly vertical 15-meter chimney. The path ahead gradually becomes easier again and Tominškova path joins us from the left, a few steps further we reach Begunjski studenec.
We continue to ascend steeply, the path is not technically demanding in this section, after about 15 minutes of further walking we reach the next junction near Kotla.
We continue left in the direction of Staničev dom pod Triglavom (slightly right Triglav and Triglavski dom na Kredarici) and through the high mountain karst terrain we bypass the Kotel valley on the left side, the path leads us along fissures and pits, so extra caution is needed especially in fog and snow, otherwise the path is not technically demanding in this section. Higher up we transversely ascend over a short scree slope, then reach a plateau-like area, and with beautiful views of Triglav and surrounding peaks we ascend to Dom Valentina Staniča.
Starting point - Aljažev dom 0:05, Aljažev dom - source of Bistrica 0:55, source of Bistrica - Begunjski studenec 2:45, Begunjski studenec - Kotel 0:15, Kotel - Dom Valentina Staniča 0:30.
