Access to starting point:
Access from Gorenjska: From Rateče or Predel we cross the border to Trbiž / Tarvisio and then we continue on the highway in the direction of Videm / Udine to exit Tolmezzo. From Tolmezzo we follow the road in the direction of village Ampezzo and mountain pass Passo della Mauria. The road then descends and brings us to a crossroad, where we continue left (possible also right) in the direction of Cortina d'Ampezzo. At all next crossroads, we follow the signs for Cortina d'Ampezzo.
In Cortina d'Ampezzo then we follow the signs for alpine pass Passo di Falzarego. This ascending road we then follow to the mentioned pass, and then we continue right towards the pass Passo Valparola. From the pass, we then descend towards the valley Val Badia. When the road flattens lower down, on the right we will notice a larger parking lot, a restaurant and a camp. We continue a few hundred meters more on the main road and then, right behind the bridge, which crosses the stream Rü Sciare, we turn right towards the restaurant Capanna Alpina. The mentioned road we then follow to its end where we park on a large parking lot before the mentioned restaurant. In the summer months, the parking lot is payable. The price for one day of parking is 5€ (July 2019).
From Primorska: We drive on the highway towards Venice / Venezia. At town Portogruaro we leave the highway towards Venice and continue right on the highway towards Pordenone. At the next highway junction near Conegliano, we continue right towards Belluno. Near Belluno the highway ends and at the next crossroads we continue in the direction of Cortina d'Ampezzo. Further, we follow the description above.
Path description:
From the parking lot, we continue past the restaurant Capanna Alpina on a macadam road which is closed to traffic. The road then quickly brings us to a plain where there is a junction. To the right leads path 20 towards the hut Ütia Scotoni, and we turn left onto path 11 and follow the signs for Col de Locia and Fanes.
From the junction, we walk for some time on a gentle macadam path, which meanwhile over a bridge crosses a stream. Further on, the path becomes somewhat narrower and brings us into dwarf pines and then into a sparse forest. Here the path also starts to ascend somewhat more steeply. Somewhat higher, the path turns left and then ascends along a fence on a somewhat steeper slope. From the path here beautiful views open up towards the west where the mountain group Sella is clearly visible. The path then crosses a pasture fence and brings us to gentler terrain beside the indistinct summit Col de Locia, which is located beside the path on our left side. On the summit there are also a few benches.
The path here turns slightly right and first gently descends and then crosses a small stream. Further on, we walk through a gentle and wide valley, which mostly runs towards the north. For some time the path still runs beside dwarf pines, later it brings us to expansive grassy slopes. Such a path then brings us to a marked junction where to the right branches off the path towards lake Lech de Legacio and further towards hut Lagazuoi.
At the junction, we continue straight across expansive meadows on which livestock also grazes in summer months. The path again starts to descend gently and with wonderful views brings us to yet another marked junction.
This time to the left branches off the path towards peaks Conturines and Lavarela. We continue further on the wide path all the way to pasture Malga Gran Fanes where there is a marked junction.
Straight ahead it is only a few minutes' walk to hut Ütia de Gran Fanes, which we already see ahead of us. At the junction, we turn right onto path number 17 or Path of Peace (Fridensweg / Via della pace). The path from the junction first runs across a grassy slope and then brings us into a belt of very sparse larch and pine forest. The path further on is marked with number 17 and with signs VB and FR, which indicate summits Vallon Bianco and Furcia Rossa. The path continues gently ascending and runs along an old military mule track towards the southeast. The path slowly turns somewhat more to the left and a view also starts to open up towards the east onto valley Valle di Fanes. The mule track here brings us onto more rocky terrain along which we soon reach a junction.
Here we leave the path towards summit Vallon Bianco and bivouac Bivacco Baccon Barborka and turn right onto path number 17 towards bivouac Bivacco della Pace and summit Monte Castello. The path from the junction ascends the slope to the right of ridge Furcia Rossa. After a short ascent we reach more grassy terrain again. Here we first descend slightly and then cross the valley to the right western side. After crossing the gentle grassy terrain, the path brings us to a signpost, where an unmarked path joins from the right. Here the path turns left and then ascends up the right side of the valley. The grassy terrain ends and the path leads us past numerous boulders below the steep walls of ridge Ciampestrin. Further on, we continuously ascend along the right side of the wide valley and soon a nice view starts to open up towards summit Monte Castello beside which is also located bivouac Bivacco della Pace. At a small break in slope we will notice a larger pole on the left side of the path. A little after the pole, the path brings us to a junction where to the left branches off an unmarked shortcut towards the secured climbing path towards summit Furcia Rossa III.
We continue further on the marked path through the wide valley, which runs towards the south, and a view also starts to open up towards summit Monte Ciaval (Monte Cavallo). Higher up the path slowly turns to the left side of the valley and then follows a somewhat steeper ascent over scree to bivouac Bivacco della Pace.
