Access to starting point:
From the Ljubljana-Jesenice highway, take the Lipce exit and follow the road ahead towards Jesenice. When you reach the traffic-light intersection where you join the old road, continue right towards Žirovnica. Follow this road only briefly, as at the next slightly larger intersection (traffic lights), continue left towards Javorniški Rovt. The road then goes through the underpass (railway) and then turns left (right Koroška Bela). Follow the road, which higher up starts to ascend steeply, towards Javorniški Rovt, but only to the intersection where, in a sharp left bend, the road branches off to the right (straight ahead) towards the Dom Trilobit hut and the Javornik source (prohibited for buses). A little further ahead, the road brings us to the mentioned hut and the reservoir lake at HE Javornik. We park on the undeveloped parking lot located behind the lake and Dom Trilobit hut (parking in front of the hut is not allowed).
Path description:
From the parking lot, head onto the cart track in the direction of the natural science and mining educational trail. The cart track immediately starts to ascend quite steeply on the left side of the stream that we hear nearby. Soon the path brings us to a wooden pole where the signpost for Planina Seča directs us slightly left (right to Javornik spring and Planina Stamare). The cart track then brings us near the stream, along which we ascend to the spring (one of the springs of the Javornik stream). Beyond the spring, the cart track turns into a footpath that ascends quite steeply in places, mostly through quite overgrown forest. The path then approaches a wall and turns left before it. A less steep ascent follows to a bench that is not in the best condition. The path continues ascending through increasingly sparse forest, so that nice views of the surroundings occasionally open up. A little further on, we will spot on the right side a kind of amphitheatre named Rida (right leads an unmarked and quite overgrown path towards Belščica). Our path turns left and after a short non-steep ascent we reach the signposts at the start of Planina Seča.
Here continue right towards Stol and Vajnež (left Struška and Golica) on the path that gently ascends further across partly grassy and dwarf pine slopes. A short descent follows and the path brings us to the screes surrounding the cirque Rida. Ahead in a gentle traverse ascent, cross the scree slopes (in the central section there is a short stretch with danger of falling rocks) and on the other side of Rida ascend one level higher. Ahead the gradient eases and the increasingly scenic path brings us past the summit of the almost imperceptible Kamnitnik (1 minute). The path ahead gently ascends, crossing slopes towards the east, and a little further crosses a somewhat more pronounced gully. Just a few steps beyond the gully, leave the marked path and in 15 minutes ascend Mali vrh via easier pathless terrain (we can also reach the summit by leaving the marked path a bit later and then ascending along the ridge).
Starting point - Planina Seča 2:00, Planina Seča - Mali vrh 1:15.
