From Kranjska Gora over the border crossing Rateče to Trbiž / Tarvisio (also possible over the border crossing Predel to here) and further on the highway towards Udine. We leave the highway at Tolmezzo, from where we continue driving towards Ampezzo and then towards the Alpine pass Passo della Mauria (1298 m). Still before the mentioned pass we arrive in the settlement Forni di Sopra, where approximately 100 m before the bottom station of the four-seater chairlift we turn right onto a narrow and higher also quite steep road. On the mentioned road we drive above the settlement, and there at the smaller crossroad we park in an appropriate place (the road continues towards the ski area Forni di Sopra and is with a traffic sign closed for public traffic). From Kranjska Gora to the starting point there is approximately 122 km.
Path description:
From the starting point, we head onto a steep macadam road in the direction of the hut Som Picol. The fairly steep road (gradient up to 30%) first leads us through the forest, then brings us to the chairlift that leads to the hut Som Picol. Here the road turns slightly to the right and flattens slightly. Higher up, beautiful views open up on the surrounding mountains, and the path brings us below the steep cliffs of the peak Clap Varmost (1751 m). Here our path, which continues on the road that then follows the ski slope, turns left and brings us to a trough with water. From here we continue a few more minutes and the path brings us to the hut Rifugio Som Picol, which is located at the upper station of the four-seater chairlift that leads from the settlement Forni di Sopra to the hut Som Picol.
A little above the hut or behind the stations of the two nearby four-seater chairlifts, the road splits into two parts. We continue on the right somewhat narrower and also steeper road (the left road leads to the nearby restaurant), which ascends along the ski slope. Higher the road becomes somewhat steeper and brings us, with a view of two artificial lakes and surrounding mountains, to the right bend where we leave the ski slope. The road then goes into the forest and brings us to the left bend, in the middle of which the climbing path to Clap Varmost branches off to the right. From here we continue on the road, from which soon another path to Clap Varmost branches off to the right. A short ascent follows on the road, which brings us to the junction. To the left leads the path to the upper station of the chairlift, while we continue right following the signs »Cra Tartoi«.
The path then leads across grassy terrain, which can also be quite muddy. Soon we come to a junction where the path to Clap Varmost branches off slightly downhill to the right. We continue somewhat to the left and the path brings us into the forest. Further on, the path for a long time crosses the slopes towards the northeast. The path gently ascends most of the time and mostly runs through the forest, only occasionally opening a view towards the south. Later the path begins to ascend somewhat more steeply and brings us to a junction at which the path from Malga Varmost (upper station of the other four-seater chairlift) joins from the left.
At the junction we continue straight and mostly in a gentle descent we cross the slopes covered with forest. Later the path twice crosses the stream and brings us out of the forest. A final ascent follows on panoramic grassy slopes to the hut on the alpine pasture Tartoi.
