Access to starting point:
a) From Cerknica or Nova vas na Blokah we drive to Bloška Polica, from where we continue towards Lož and Babno Polje. In the settlement Pudob we turn right towards Snežnik, Ilirska Bistrica, Knežak and the nearby settlement Kozarišče. In Kozarišče we drive slightly left towards Snežnik and also at the following intersections follow the signs for Snežnik. At the end of Kozarišče the asphalt ends, and immediately after the bridge over Mali Obrh we turn left towards Mašun and Knežak. A long drive on a gravel road follows, on which we drive approximately 11 km to Leskova dolina. From there on the main road we continue for a little less than 1.5 km to the place where the signs for Gašperjev hrib (7 km) direct us left onto a somewhat steeper road. After a good 5 km of further driving we arrive at a marked intersection, where the inscription on the rock for Gašperjev hrib and Snežnik directs us right. We then follow this road to a small parking area, next to which we notice the mountain direction sign for Snežnik.
b) We drive to Pivka, from where we continue towards Knežak. In Knežak at the marked intersection we turn left towards Mašun and the settlements Bač and Koritnice. A little further we go right towards Mašun and Koritnice (straight Bač). After Koritnice the road starts to climb noticeably. After 18 km of driving from the main intersection in Knežak we arrive at Mašun, from where we turn right towards Sviščaki. After approximately 2 km of gravel we arrive at an intersection, where we choose the left, lower road (the right leads towards Sviščaki). On it we drive for approximately another 4 km to the intersection located immediately after the road marker 12 km. At this intersection we turn right onto a side forest road (straight Kozarišče and Leskova dolina). On it we drive approximately 1.3 km, then join the road from Leskova dolina. This is followed by less than 4 km of driving to the marked intersection, where the inscription on the rock for Gašperjev hrib and Snežnik directs us right. We then follow this road to a small parking area, next to which we notice the mountain direction sign for Snežnik.
c) First we drive to Ilirska Bistrica, then continue towards Sviščaki (the turnoff in the middle of Ilirska Bistrica is marked, but perhaps somewhat less noticeable). The entire regional road to Sviščaki is asphalted. After approximately 19 km of ascent we arrive at an intersection in the immediate vicinity of Planinski dom na Sviščakih, where we continue straight past the hut towards Mašun. After another 10 km of gravel we arrive at an intersection, where we turn sharply right towards Leskova dolina (straight Mašun 2 km). From this intersection we drive for approximately another 4 km to the intersection located immediately after the road marker 12 km. Here we continue right onto a side forest road (straight Kozarišče and Leskova dolina).
Route description:
At the starting point we notice the markings for Snežnik, which direct us onto a cart track that climbs relatively steeply through the forest. After a few minutes the steepness eases, and the cart track turns into a pleasant path that leads us along an indistinct ridge or right next to it. Soon we reach a viewpoint with a view of Snežnik. The path then descends slightly into a belt of dense forest, through which it climbs transversely. Higher up we step onto a larger meadow, from which a beautiful view of the surrounding hills opens up. We walk for some time along the scenic grassy slope, then the path returns to the forest and begins to climb steeply. From the forest we soon pass into dwarf pine, where we climb over increasingly scenic terrain. A short descent follows, after which a little-visited path from Grčovec joins from the left.
We continue in the direction of Snežnik on the marked path, which leads us from the dwarf pine onto an unwooded summit slope. We follow this increasingly scenic path to the summit, which we reach after a few minutes of walking.

Discussion about the trip Gašperjev hrib - Veliki Snežnik

On Wednesday there was a wonderful morning with clear visibility already above Snežnik Castle, while the valleys on the Inner Carniola side remained in fog until the afternoon. Since I managed to drive up high towards Gašperjev hrib early, I decided on a slightly longer hike around Snežnik. First over Gašperjev hrib from the eastern side to the summit, with deep morning views in all directions. No wind, which is rare on Snežnik, all morning. Then down via Mali Snežnik towards Grda Draga, where I turned left uphill into the snow and reached the new (renovated) signpost on the path from Sviščaki, followed it to the summit of Snežnik for the second time. From there I descended south, keeping to the left edge of the scree to the ridge and then down first to the hunting hut, then by road to the car and back to the valley. A full, enjoyable morning in the sun, with beautiful views and sparkling snow, which Snežnik got a fresh layer of yesterday.

I'm wondering if this path, in case of very strong bora wind and ice, is also as exposed as the one from Sviščaki, right from the saddle between Snežniks towards the hut, where the bora blows dangerously and it's very dangerous in ice, risk of slipping far.

The path is not exposed. In the lower and middle sections it mostly runs through forest, where it is steeply in places (can be dangerous in case of ice, forest partially blocks the bora...), in between it flattens twice or three times across meadows and higher across scrub. The last ascent ca. 20 minutes below the summit is again steep and unsecured - here in winter it could be similar to the saddle between Snežniks, depending on conditions, equipment and hiker's experience.

Not only is there a high risk of slipping here too, but it's also precipitously close to the saddle. There is another path, but you have to know it and it's not marked - winter gear is also mandatory. Good luck!
