Globasnitz - Petzen (Kordeschkopf) (Peca (Kordeževa glava))

Access to starting point:
A) Via the Jezerski vrh border crossing we drive into Austria, then after approximately 6 km past Železno Kapla / Bad Eisenkappel we turn right towards Velikovec / Völkermarkt. We follow the main road towards Velikovec for 2 km, then we turn right again, this time in the direction of the settlement Pliberk / Bleiburg. Further, we drive through the Podjune valley, then signs for Globasnica / Globasnitz direct us right onto a local road, along which in 2 km of additional driving we arrive at the village center, where we park on a large parking lot. From the Jezerski vrh border crossing to the starting point is approximately 33 km.
B) From Dravograd or Slovenj Gradec we drive to Ravne na Koroškem, then we continue driving in the direction of the Holmec border crossing. When we drive into Austria we first drive towards Pliberk / Bleiburg, then we follow the signs for Globasnica / Globasnitz. After approximately 13 km from the Holmec border crossing we arrive in Globasnica, where we park on a large parking lot near the local church.

Path description:
From the large parking lot in Globasnica we continue towards the end of the village, where we soon join the "main" road, which leads almost unnoticeably upwards towards the neighbouring village. When we arrive in Podroje / Podrain, we continue for a short time along the road leading towards Podpeca / Koprein Petzen, then signs with the inscription "Wandersteg-Petzen" and "Wackendorfer Alm" direct us left onto a narrower road, along which we quickly arrive at the "last" house in the village.
At the mentioned house we leave the road and continue the ascent on a grassy cart track, which quickly enters a belt of forest. After a gentle ascent through the forest we arrive at a belt of bushes and ferns, through which we ascend along a usually nicely mowed path. A little higher it joins a macadam road, which we follow to the right and along which we walk to a slight left bend, in the middle of which a marked footpath branches off to the right towards Veška planina / Wackendorfer Alm. After a short ascent we also cross a worse forest road, then the path enters dense forest, through which it begins to ascend ever steeper. There follows a long and relatively steep path, which leads us most of the time through dense forest, only occasionally opening up some views towards the neighbouring Topica, Junska gora and Obir. Higher we touch the mountain road, which we immediately leave, and continue the ascent sharply right onto the footpath, which continues ascending through the forest. Further we cross a shorter panoramic slope, from which a nice view opens towards Golica and the Podjune valley. The path further temporarily returns to the forest, then joins the previously mentioned road. We continue about 50 to 100 m along the road, then past a barrier preventing further driving we arrive at Veška planina.
We can also reach Veška planina via the mountain road from Podgora / Untrebergen (toll 6 eur, July 2011). This shortens the path by approximately 3 hours.
From the mountain pasture we continue along an initially poorly visible path, which continues between the chapel and hut. The path first ascends moderately, then temporarily levels out and crosses the slope to the left. The trail then widens and ascends to the nearby cart track road, which we follow to the right. We walk along the road for a short time, then the marks direct us slightly right onto a footpath, which ascends parallel to the road. The marked path returns to the cart track exactly where it ends.
We continue along the right side of the water trough and for a short time along the bottom of an indistinct valley, then the path turns left and ascends across a panoramic grassy slope, where the trail temporarily disappears. When we step onto the grassy slope we continue right and begin to ascend steeply. Higher the trail levels out and brings us into a belt of dwarf pines. The path further leads past a smaller wooden "shelter", then it begins to ascend somewhat steeper towards the summit of Veška kope / Wackendorfer spitze, whose summit we reach after a few minutes of further walking.
From Veška kope we continue along a panoramic ridge, along which with some shorter descents and ascents we arrive at a marked junction, where the path from Podpeca / Koprein Petzen joins us from the right.
We continue straight ahead and with nice views of the eastern Karawanks and Kamnik Savinja Alps in about 10 minutes of further walking we ascend to the summit of Bistriška špica.
From Bistriška špica we continue along the marked path, which begins to descend along the ridge (southeast direction). After a short descent the path enters the bushes, which gradually begins to ascend towards one of the peaks in the Peca range (nameless on maps). From the mentioned summit the path descends somewhat and brings us to the place where we reach the state border. We continue the ascent along and beside the border ridge, on the path which in a moderate ascent across a pleasant grassy slope brings us to Končnikov vrh.
From Končnikov vrh we continue along the marked path, which begins to descend towards Knipsovo sedlo. After a few minutes of descent the path from the Peca ski area joins us from the left, but we continue slightly right along the path, which quickly brings us to the information boards at Knipsovo sedlo.
From the saddle we continue straight in the direction of Peca and Dom na Peci (right the Topla valley) along the path, which first ascends slightly then descends to the saddle between Velika glava and Kordeževa glava. From the mentioned saddle the path begins to ascend across towards the highest summit of Peca, which we reach after approximately 15 minutes of further walking.
