From the Ljubljana-Jesenice highway, take the Lesce exit and follow the road towards Bled and then towards Bohinjska Bistrica. Continue driving towards Lake Bohinj (Ribčev Laz), where you come to a junction, continuing straight along the left (south) side of the lake in the direction of Ukanc and Savica Waterfall. Follow this increasingly narrow road to the large parking lot at the Savica Hut. The parking lot is paid.
Path description:
From the parking lot, head onto the wide footpath in the direction of Savica Waterfall and Dom na Komni. After a short gentle ascent, the path brings us to a marked junction, where the tourist path to Savica Waterfall branches off to the right; we continue slightly left or straight on the wide footpath towards Komna. The path ahead ascends alongside Savica for a short time, then brings us to the first of the marked 48 hairpin turns. After an hour and a half of moderate ascent through the forest, the path brings us to the mentioned 48th hairpin turn, from which a beautiful view of Lake Bohinj opens up. Here the path turns slightly right and enters the valley named Pekel, where it ascends gently for some time, then turns right and ascends somewhat more steeply again. Already after some 10 steps, the path turns left again and continues ascending parallel to the valley. Ahead, the gentle to moderately steep path gradually enters a sparser forest, from which we soon see Dom na Komni. The path ahead leads past a smaller artificial cave, and higher also past a natural chasm, which is fenced so that none of the hikers falls into it. Further, the path ascends somewhat more steeply and after a few steps of further walking brings us to a junction, where the path to Črno Lake branches off to the right.
Continue straight on the wide path (mule track), which a little higher brings us to the next junction. Again continue left (right Koča pri Triglavskih jezerih) on the path, which ascends somewhat more steeply and after a few minutes of further walking brings us to Dom na Komni.
From the hut, continue right (left Vogel, Tolminski Kuk and Planina Govnjač) on the marked path towards Koča pod Bogatinom. Further, the pleasant and completely flat path brings us to Planina na Kraju in 15 minutes of walking, in the middle of which stands Koča pod Bogatinom.
On the other side of the pasture, the path to Planina za Skalo branches off to the right; we continue straight on the wide mule track towards Bogatinsko sedlo and Krn. The path ahead ascends transversely over the relatively steep slopes of Srednji vrh, thereby bypassing the Gracija valley on the right side. Further, the path ascends considerably to the left, where it approaches the steep slopes of Bogatin completely. Only a right turn follows, and the path brings us to Bogatinsko sedlo, from which a nice view of Krn opens up.
At the saddle, continue straight towards Krn and Krnsko jezero (left Bogatin and Mahavšček, right Lanževica) on the path, which begins to descend gradually. The path, running along an old military mule track, after a few minutes of descent brings us to slopes that are partly overgrown with dwarf pines. A little lower, two paths branch off to the left leading to Krn (Krn via Vrh nad Peski and over Batognica); in both cases, we continue straight on the still descending path. Further, the path levels out, and from the left the path from Mali Šmohor joins us. A few minutes of easy walking follow, and the path brings us to Planina Duplje, where at the junction we continue left towards Krnsko jezero and Krn (right Dom pri Krnskih jezerih and Lepena valley).
From Planina Duplje, continue on the gentle path, which in under 10 minutes of further walking brings us to the pearl of the Krn range, Krnsko jezero.
The marked path then leads us along the left side of the lake at the foot of the Mali Šmohor scree. On the other side of the lake, the path turns slightly left and then ascends a somewhat steeper slope, where somewhat higher an unmarked (upper) path joins us, which traverses the screes above Krnsko jezero in a lateral ascent (this path is somewhat shorter but exposed to falling rocks). The path then turns slightly right and brings us to extensive torrential debris deposits, which end at Planina na Polju.
With wonderful views of the surrounding peaks, we cross the grassy Planina na Polju (on the right side, somewhat off the marked path, we will notice a hunting hut) and behind it begin ascending a small valley. The path then ascends more steeply and soon brings us to a partly marked junction. The marked path towards Krnska škrbina turns right here (straight unmarked path towards Prag saddle (2068 m)) and begins to ascend more steeply. The path then moves onto steep slopes, across which we ascend laterally to Krnska škrbina (on this section, snowfields may be encountered in early summer).
From the škrbina, continue right (sharp left Prag, left Batognica and straight Planina Kuhinja) on the path, which begins to ascend the grassy slope of the mountain. We follow this increasingly scenic path to the scenic summit, which we reach after about 30 minutes of walking from Krnska škrbina.
From the summit, we can descend to Gomiščkovo zavetišče in 5 minutes.
