Access to starting point:
a) From Cerknica or Nova vas na Blokah we drive to Bloška Polica, from where we continue towards Lož and Babno Polje. In the settlement Pudob we turn right towards Snežnik, Ilirska Bistrica, Knežak and the nearby settlement Kozarišče. In Kozarišče we drive slightly left towards Snežnik and also at the following intersections follow the signs for Snežnik. At the end of Kozarišče the asphalt ends, and immediately after the bridge over Mali Obrh we turn left towards Mašun and Knežak. A relatively long drive on a macadam road follows. After approximately 11 km we arrive at Leskova dolina, where we park at one of the parking areas along the road.
b) We drive to Pivka, from where we continue towards Knežak. In Knežak at the marked intersection we turn left towards Mašun and the settlements Bač and Koritnice. A little further we go right towards Mašun and Koritnice (straight Bač). After Koritnice the road starts to ascend noticeably. After 18 km drive from the main intersection in Knežak we arrive at Mašun, from where we turn right towards Sviščaki. After approximately 2 km of macadam we arrive at an intersection, where we choose the left, lower road (the right leads towards Sviščaki). We drive on it for another approximately 7 km to Leskova dolina, where we park appropriately along the road.
c) First we drive to Ilirska Bistrica, then continue towards Sviščaki (the turnoff in the middle of Ilirska Bistrica is marked, but perhaps somewhat less visible). Initially we ascend on an asphalt road, after less than 12 km the macadam begins. After another 7 km we arrive at an intersection in the immediate vicinity of Planinski dom na Sviščakih, where we continue straight to the hut. From there we continue driving towards Mašun. After 10 km of macadam we arrive at an intersection, where we turn sharply right towards Leskova dolina (straight Mašun 2 km). From this intersection we drive another approximately 7 km to Leskova dolina, where we park at a suitable place along the road.
Route description:
Along the road leading to Leskova dolina we notice mountain direction signs for Snežnik. They direct us onto a footpath that quickly takes us through a belt of forest to a forest road towards Lepi Dol. We merely cross this road and continue the ascent on the marked path, which soon enters dense forest. Further we walk along a cart track, where we can shorten the route with a few marked shortcuts, then we step onto a macadam road and follow it to the left.
We walk along it for approximately 20 minutes until we reach a marked intersection, where we turn right towards Snežnik and Gašperjev hrib. From here the road begins to ascend somewhat more steeply and higher up takes us to the starting point of the path Gašperjev hrib–Snežnik. At this point we leave the road and turn onto the marked footpath towards Snežnik.
The path first ascends steeply along a cart track, then levels out and after a few minutes turns into a pleasant trail that leads us along an indistinct ridge or right beside it. Soon we reach a viewpoint with a view of Snežnik. The trail then descends slightly into a belt of dense forest, through which it ascends transversely. Higher up we step onto a larger meadow, from which a beautiful view of the surrounding hills opens up. We walk for some time along the scenic grassy slope, then the path returns to the forest and begins to ascend steeply. From the forest we soon pass into dwarf pine, where we ascend over increasingly scenic terrain. A short descent follows, then from the left a little-used path from Grčovec joins us.
We continue towards Snežnik on the marked path, which leads us from the dwarf pine onto an unwooded summit slope. We follow this increasingly scenic path to the summit, which we reach after a few minutes of walking.

Discussion about the trip Leskova dolina - Veliki Snežnik

Why go along the road. In Čaši the path branches off to the right along forest paths to the hunting hut on Gašper. From there onwards along the hunting trail to Snežnik.

Probably you had a close encounter with our Notranjska domestic animal - bear and two cubs. The news spreads quickly through the land of Kranjska

Yes, it's true. But I only saw one cub and its mother. We eyed each other at about 20 m. Fortunately, she only took a defensive stance and didn't attack.

@Tadej I'm curious how you reacted upon encountering the bear with cub? Did you retreat, ....? Best, Matic

The bear with cub was right on the marked path (dirt road) when I was descending towards Leskova dolina. When I spotted them, I turned around as quickly as possible and went back to the nearest road.

How is this path in winter, can we count on a packed trail and how is the road to the starting point? And how is it currently? Thanks!

The path from Leskova dolina is rarely packed, usually just a track for ski tourers, and even that is rarer. Usually you can reach Leskova dolina without major issues. Best regards, Andrej

Does anyone know what the current conditions are like on this trail? Can a track be expected?

Hello. On Saturday or Sunday I would go on this trail to Snežnik. Should I take crampons and also an ice axe or won't it be necessary? Can you park right by the road as in the first picture here? Is there a crowd on Saturday, Sunday for parking? It looks to me like the car is practically on the road. Is it usually windy, cold up there or on the way? Any additional advice? thanks for the answers.

lubadar, plans have changed and I chose other, closer and shorter hills for these days. Won't go for at least another week, and even then not sure if I'll have time. happy new year!

Has anyone perhaps been to Snežnik from this direction? Is it trodden?
|
|

| _sandra_28. 01. 2013 |
I was there yesterday; it wasn't trodden, there were some ski tracks, now a path is made higher up, when you come out of the forest it sinks to the knees..

Best regards to all! I'm interested in the current condition or if the path is passable to the top. Namely, I plan to go this way on Sunday.

Given that tomorrow there will most likely be 10-20 cm of new snow there, it's better to wait with the question until Saturday....

Sunday and Monday on Snežnik. Not much to write about Sunday. The forecasted afternoon clearing wasn't anywhere near Snežnik. Gusts of wind probably reached at least 100 km/h, as it suddenly shifts you a meter. We descended to the southern side towards Skalca and to the forest edge. The snow is hard and great for walking. Glissading perfectly fine, only visibility in very diffuse light is a bit annoying, as some bump can hit you badly. Hoping for better weather we went again on Sunday and the weather didn't disappoint this time. At the top still some clouds and if waited a couple more minutes it would have cleared almost completely. We descended to Smrekova Draga in NW direction - 400m elevation on hard snow that holds quite well. Then ascent about 100m from Vrtača towards the winter path from Leskova dolina. From here fantastic view of the northern slopes of Snežnik. Followed by descent through the forest to Čaša and on to Leskova dolina. A few snapshots and views in the video on the link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_rWL-BeCUM

What are the current conditions? Is there still a lot of fallen timber on the path?

Are there any more bears on this path? Is the path well marked (so I don't end up in some den )

Today on Snežnik via the path from Leskova dolina. No sign of a bear, nor she-bear. At the start of the path poorly marked where you need to go left (not straight up the hill). Otherwise lush, solitary and strenuous path.
