Access to starting point:
We leave the A2 Graz - Wien motorway at the Aspang Markt exit and follow the road to the mentioned place. When we arrive in the town we follow the signs for the settlement Mariensee, at the end of the town we turn left again in the direction of the settlement Mariensee (straight on St. Corona am Wechsel). After approximately 8.5 km of further driving we arrive at the centre of the settlement Mariensee, but we continue driving. The settlement soon ends, and we continue along the Großer Pestingbach stream to the marked parking area where there is a biological toilet.
Route description:
At the end of the parking area we leave the asphalt road and continue straight on the side gravel road that leads along the Großer Pestingbach stream. We walk for a few minutes on the poorer road, then turn slightly right onto the footpath that crosses the stream and continues on its right side (viewed in the direction of our walk). Later we return to the left side of the stream and step again onto the poorer road, which we follow only to the right bend or the place where the road crosses the stream. Here we head straight onto the marked path that quickly takes us to the viewing platform below the waterfall. We then bypass the waterfall on the left side and in a short, steep ascent climb to the arranged shelter. From there only a few steps separate us from the fenced viewpoint above the waterfall.
Above the waterfall we continue for some time along the picturesque stream, then ascend steeply to the gravel road, which we follow right to the nearby junction, where we turn left in the direction of the alpine pasture Marienseer Schwaig. In the continuation we ascend transversely to the left, at several junctions following the markings or signs for Marienseer Schwaig.
When we arrive at the marked fork where we join the steep and gentle path we go right, then in a few minutes ascend to the alpine pasture Marienseer Schwaig.
In the continuation we follow the signs for Hochwechsel, initially crossing several pasture fences. An ascent through the pasture area follows, a little further we also cross a poorer forest road. Higher up the pasture area widens, the path in parts becomes less distinct and in parts also harder to follow, but if we carefully follow the markings we stay on the right direction. In the final part of the increasingly scenic ascent the again better visible path becomes somewhat steeper and we follow it to the hut Wetterkoglerhaus am Hochwechsel, behind which near the chapel is also the highest point of the summit Hochwechsel.
Important warning: On the route a precautionary measure is mandatory, as local authorities for safety reasons expressly prohibit crossing the bridge and wooden footbridges in case of storms, thunder or raised water level (high water). Before the visit be sure to check the weather forecast.
