Hochwechsel

Description of mountain:
Hochwechsel is the highest peak of the Wechsel range at 1743 meters. It lies on the border between the Austrian federal states of Styria and Lower Austria, roughly halfway between Graz and Vienna. As a rounded, grassy summit rising above the tree line, it offers exceptional panoramic views. In clear weather the vista extends in all directions far into the distance, since no higher peaks are nearby; the hills above Semmering and the massive Rax and Schneeberg ranges are especially prominent.
Just below the summit stands the mountain hut Wetterkoglerhaus am Hochwechsel, providing shelter and refreshments for hikers. Beside the hut, at the highest point, is a memorial chapel (Gedenkkapelle am Hochwechsel) dedicated to soldiers fallen in both world wars. Thanks to its easy access and fine views, the peak is popular with hikers and mountain bikers in summer and with ski tourers and cross-country skiers in winter.
