Mátala - Kókkini ámmos / Red beach (Crete) (Red beach walk)

The starting point is the place Mátala, on the southern coast of Crete in Greece (accessible by road and also by public transport).

Route description:
The starting point is the place Mátala, on the southern coast of Crete in Greece.

At the dried olive tree at the crossroads, from which the artist Spyros Stefanakis carved facial sculptures, continue into the village past souvenir shops and restaurants.

In a small square the road forks and here follow the left street (and not the road closer to the coast). At the fork there is a signpost for Red beach (see signs for "Red beach").

Then follow the first street to the right and immediately thereafter left uphill to the stairs. To the left of the stairs the path to Red beach begins. Follow this path to the saddle of Cape Mátala (Ákra Mátala). On the right a peak with ruins of the former wall appears (angl. Koules of Mátala / Mátala tower; gr. Κουλές Ματάλων). Follow the path straight ahead. On the right there is another local peak of the cape at 85 meters. Continue straight along the fence to the pasture fence, after which the path begins to descend toward the beach. Follow the path and after 10 minutes with nice views arrive at the beach.
