Description of mountain:
Red Beach or Kókkini ámmos (Engl. Red beach, Gr. Κόκκινη άμμος) is located on the southern coast of Crete in Greece. The starting point is the town of Mátala, which is connected by road to the two largest towns on Crete to the north, namely Heraklion to the NE and Rethimno to the NW. Public transport also runs there regularly.
The beach is sandy; Kókkini ámmos means red sand in translation. The beach is accessible from Mátala only by boat or on foot via a trail over Cape Mátala (Ákra Mátala). The terrain is rough, hikers climb to 85 meters above sea level along the way, so appropriate footwear is necessary. There are two bars with a hippie vibe on the beach, and part of the beach is also nudist. The water on the southern side of Crete is mostly crystal clear, and the Libyan Sea is usually slightly warmer than the Aegean to the north.
