Access to starting point:
From the Ljubljana–Jesenice highway, we take the Ljubelj exit and follow the road ahead towards the border crossing. We leave the main road at the spot where the signs for »camp and Podljubelj« direct us to the right. When we leave the main road, we will already after a few meters arrive at a crossroads, where we continue left in the direction of »Kofce«. Further on, we drive through the village on a slightly ascending road and then turn right in the direction of »Matizovec and Kofce«. We follow this occasionally somewhat narrower road, which is asphalted in the lower part, to a larger marked parking lot, about 150 vertical meters below the Matizovec farm.
Path description:
From the large free parking lot we continue on a macadam road, on which in approximately 20 minutes we arrive at the Matizovec farm.
From Matizovec we continue on a poor road in the direction of Dom na Kofcah, and at several successive junctions we carefully follow the blazes. After a few minutes of walking on the poor road or cart track, the blazes direct us onto a steep footpath, which first ascends transversely to the left, then transitions to a forested ridge, where it turns slightly to the right. Further on, we ascend along a steep mountain path, which higher crosses a cart track and gradually flattens behind it. Just a little further ahead, the forest thins out, the marked path turns right into the forest and a little higher joins the cart track, which ascends transversely to the right. The cart track higher turns left, and from the right the marked path from Kal also joins us.
From the junction ahead, the forest ends, and the increasingly scenic path brings us to Dom na Kofcah in 5 minutes of further walking.
From Dom na Kofcah we continue right in the direction of the Šija pasture. The path first crosses the slopes towards the east in a gentle descent, then joins a wide cart track, which brings us out of the forest onto the Ilovica pasture. The path then begins to ascend gently and after a few more minutes of easy walking brings us to the shelter on the Šija pasture.
From the shelter on the Šija pasture we continue on the macadam road, which already after a few meters brings us to a marked junction, where slightly to the left an unmarked path branches off to Kladivo and the old border guard path, which crosses the southern slopes of Košuta. We continue on the road, which shortly ahead turns slightly to the right, then brings us to a side ridge, where it turns left (here a nice view opens up towards the south for a while). From the longer left bend ahead, the road begins to descend more steeply, and we continue along it to the start of the Pungrat pasture. Here we leave the road and walk across a gently undulating hummocky meadow in a few minutes to the shepherd's hut on the Pungrat pasture.
From the hut we continue on the marked path in the direction of Dolga njiva (left Škrbina and Veliko Kladivo) and initially continue the ascent on a gentle cart track, which ends a little higher. We continue on a poorly visible little path, which initially continues across hummocky meadows. Higher up, the previously mentioned border guard path joins us almost imperceptibly from the left, but we continue straight to the nearby grazing fence. We cross the mentioned fence and step from the Pungrat pasture onto the pastures of Tegoška planina. Continuing along the upper edge, we cross the grazing areas of the upper part of Tegoška planina, then the path turns slightly to the right and leads us past a water trough into dense forest. A short crossing through the forest follows, then we ascend to the scenic ridge of Kisovec. From there we descend a few steps to a small saddle, where we cross a grazing fence. The path ahead takes us to a cart track, along which we descend transversely across a large clearing. On the other side of the clearing, the path returns to the forest, through which it begins to descend. After a short descent, an unmarked path (marked with arrows) from the shepherd's hut on Tegoška planina joins us from the right, but we continue left and continue crossing the slopes of Košuta towards the east to the northeast. A crossing of occasionally steeper and partly grassy slopes follows, and we follow the path, from which views occasionally open up to the surrounding peaks, to a marked junction, where the marked path to Košutnikov turn branches off to the left. At the mentioned junction we continue straight on the lower right path, along which we descend in a few minutes to the nearby forest road. When we step onto the road, we follow it left, and along it in a few steps we arrive at the mountain dairy on Spodnja Dolga njiva pasture.
Further on, we continue uphill across the pasture, in the middle of which runs a wide cart track path that brings us out of the forest onto Zgornja Dolga njiva pasture after a good 15 minutes of walking.
The gradient of the path, which has so far been moderate, eases, and the path soon brings us across beautiful grassy terrain to the central part of the pasture, where the blazes end. We continue on a slightly ascending path that runs along a smaller but very pronounced torrent gully. A little further ahead, the unmarked path splits into two parts.
We continue slightly right (left Tolsta Košuta) along the path, which a little further climbs onto the border ridge. The ridge, a little further ahead, turns left, the path first descends from the forepeak, then along and beside the ridge brings us to the summit of Mala Košuta in a few minutes of scenic walking.
