Over a border crossing in Rateče we drive through Trbiž / Tarvisio, Ukve / Ugovizzo to the settlement Tablja / Pontebba, where we turn right following the signs »Passo di Pramollo / Nassfeld« (Slovenian Mokrine). On the pass, still on the Italian side, before the lake, a road branches off to the right behind the hotel towards Planina Javornik (Auernig Alm). Immediately after the turn-off, on the right side of the road, is a parking lot where we park.
Path description:
From the parking lot, we head onto a cobbled road towards the mountain pasture Javornik (Auernig Alm). At the junction of the road, which is closed to public traffic, there are also signposts. The road, which is cobbled in the initial section, ascends more steeply and then leads us through the forest. Further on, the road becomes a gravel track, and soon views begin to open up towards the surrounding peaks. This road then soon brings us to the mountain pasture Javornik (Auernig Alm), where a shepherd’s cottage is located.
At the mountain pasture, where there is a crossroad, we continue left, and after a short ascent along the road, we reach the signposts. We head left onto path 501 towards the peaks Auernig (Javornik) and Garnitzenberg (Krniška gora). The footpath quickly leads us into the forest, through which we ascend for some time. The path brings us out of the forest onto a grassy plain, from which a beautiful view opens up towards the nearby Krniška gora. On the plain, we cross a stream and begin ascending again on a grassy slope. Higher up, there are also a few trees and dwarf pines along the path. This path then leads us to the Auernig Sattel saddle, where there is a marked crossroad.
Left leads the path towards the summit of Javornik (Auernig), but we turn right towards the summit of Krniška gora (Italian Monte Carnizza, German Garnitzenberg). From the crossing, we initially ascend along the ridge covered with bushes and dwarf pines; later, the path veers to the right, following an ascent on a grassy slope back towards the ridge. Further, we then walk along a slightly narrower and mostly grassy ridge. After a short descent, a path branches off to the left towards the upper station of the Gartnerkofel cableway.
We continue along the scenic border ridge, where we briefly ascend through a band of dwarf pines. Only a short ascent on a grassy ridge remains to reach the summit.
