Planina Zapleč - Krn

Access to starting point:
From Tolmin or Bovec we drive to Kobarid, from there we follow the road in the direction of Drežnica (the turn-off is from the Kobarid bypass). We continue over the bridge across the Soča River and immediately after the bridge we turn left in the direction of Drežnica. In Drežnica we come to a crossroads, where the road to the village Magozd branches off to the left, and we continue a little further to the next crossroads, where we turn left in the direction of Drežniške Ravne. The road then brings us to a crossroads in Drežniških Ravnah, where we turn right uphill in the direction of Krasji vrh. At the next crossroads we again turn right and follow the road to a water trough, where the asphalt ends. We then follow the macadam road for quite a few kilometers to the parking lot by the road in front of the TNP sign and in front of the grazing fence.

Path description:
At the end of the parking lot where we cross the grazing fence, a signpost for Krn and the saddle Vrata points us right onto a footpath. The path, which runs along a somewhat grass-covered mule track, first ascends transversely and then ascends for a long time in long zigzags on a grassy slope. The path, which is somewhat less trodden, is otherwise marked with rare blazes, mostly in the form of red lines. Later the path leads us for a shorter time also across a slope that is partially overgrown with bushes. In the continuation we then continue ascending in long zigzags on a grassy slope. Higher up as we approach the ridge somewhat, the path crosses the slope to the right and brings us to a junction marked with an inscription on a rock.
To the left the path leads toward the saddle Vrata, we continue straight where the inscription Krn directs us.
The path brings us from the junction soon to somewhat exposed slopes, which we cross in the continuation during the ascent toward the east. The path here runs along an old military mule track and leads us also through a short tunnel. A zigzag ascent follows on a steep slope, which brings us to a junction below the summit of Krnčica.
To the left upward the path leads toward the summit Krnčica, to which there are only a few minutes of ascent left. If we want to bypass the summit, we continue straight where the signs for Krn direct us.
If we continue straight along the mule track, crossing of steep slopes follows, then a path running over the summit Krnčica soon joins us from the left.
In the continuation we still cross steep slopes toward the southeast and along the path we will notice quite a few remains from the time of the First World War. Later the path approaches the ridge completely and soon brings us to a junction. To the left the path leads over Srednji vrh, to which there are only a few tens of meters left, if we continue straight we bypass the summit on the south side. The paths then soon join again.
The path then brings us to the left north side of the ridge and begins to descend somewhat on mostly grassy terrain. The path here is somewhat less trodden, marked mostly with red triangles and lines. The path then leads us across somewhat more stony terrain and brings us to scree fields on the north side of Krn. The scree fields we then mostly cross in a gentle ascent toward the east. In early summer there can still be snow patches on this part of the path. The path across the scree fields then brings us to the east side of Krn where the terrain becomes grassy again. Our path then soon joins the better trodden path from Krnsko jezero.
From here a short ascent follows to Krnska škrbina where there is a marked junction. From the škrbina we continue right (sharply left Prag, left Batognica and straight planina Kuhinja) along the path which begins to ascend on the grassy slope of the mountain. We then follow this increasingly scenic path to the scenic summit, which we reach after approximately 30 minutes of walking from Krnska škrbina.
From the summit we can descend to Gomiščkovo zavetišče in 5 minutes.
