Access to starting point:
From Split we drive along the coastal road towards Dubrovnik. Just a little after Makarska the road branches off to the left towards Biokovo and Vrgorac. We head onto this road, which we follow to the spot where a marked road branches off sharply to the left into the park Biokovo (toll). We follow this narrow but asphalted road to the parking lot near the mountain hut below Sveti Jurij (at the intersection after approximately 15 km of driving, we go right).
Route description:
From the parking lot, we continue on the road first past the mountain hut, and then also past a gate to the traffic sign for danger of falling stones. At the sign, we notice partly faded blazes, which point us to the right onto a footpath. After a few steps along the path, we notice a rope, along which we then steeply ascend the slope straight upwards. After a little less than half an hour of walking, the steepness decreases and the path brings us to the fence, which protects the tower. Here we continue right and on a gently sloping panoramic path in a few dozen steps we get to the church of St. Jurij.

You can go to Sv. Jure also from Makarska, where you turn (if driving from Split direction) at the beginning of Makarska to the left, look for the Veliko Brdo sign. The road starts winding steeply uphill, follow it to the church, you can leave the car there. Then from the church uphill between houses, where the markers will lead you. The path is routed through the gorge of the Biokovo massif, leads through gorges and is very scenic. In two and a half hours you are out of the gorge, then you have another 2h to the asphalt road at Sv. Jure, from the road to the top - to the church of Sv. Jure another good half hour. I recommend lots of water! The entire tour is marked, the upper part is a bit less marked but visible. In Makarska right by the coast there is a Tourist Office, they have a very good Biokovo map 1:25.000. Enjoy the beautiful views!nasmeh

With a friend we did approximately the trail described by dereza28, from Makarska to Sv. Jure and back. Makarska - Vošac (summit directly above Makarska) approx. 3.5h, Vošac-footpath-Sv. Jure 3h. Return by road to Vošac and down to Makarska. I think this is a bit longer but the most beautiful variant. The elevation difference is over 2000m, the distance is also considerable, so it's a serious tour. If you are as crazy as we are, and do the ascent in summer, due to extreme temperatures I recommend a night ascent. We started at 16h from Makarska (at 38 degrees Celsius), so at the beginning up to Makar and higher we ascended quite slowly. Watching the sunset from Vošac is a real experience! From there you have to head into the valley to the northeast to the start of the road. A few meters along the road, then a path branches off to the left, which brings us after many ascents and descents to the summit of Sv. Jurij. The path ends on the road, from there you can go left up the road to the summit or about 200m right down (to the mountain hut) and then along the poles and ropes to the summit.
From Vošac you can also go up the road (at the intersection turn left). The ascent will be about an hour shorter, but much more tedious.
At the summit there is a church and a transmitter (restricted area). The views are fantastic. During our visit all mountain huts (at Vošac, under Sv. Jure) were closed!
For the whole trail we needed 11 hours + 4 hours sleep. I recommend at least 4 liters of water (if very hot, rather more), enough food, sleeping bag. I hope the information will be useful. Enjoy!

Hello,

I'm reading a bit about your experiences with Biokovo, because this year we've set a goal with colleagues to reach the top of Biokovo (Sveti Jurij). We'll be vacationing in Makarska from 14.8. to 25.8., sometime in that period we'll head up. From what I see and read, the paths aren't too demanding, so we probably won't have problems with the ascent?

I'm interested, since we're going up in summer when incredible heat is expected, what equipment do you recommend bringing?

I assume tracksuits etc. will be too hot for us, shorts and sneakers might not be best for mountains...?

Anyway, I want as many tips as possible and experiences are welcome,

Thanks in advance!

To Vošac is a very nice path. From there onwards to the top of S. Jurij you can go by bus.
Equipment should be the same as in our mountains. Don't let the sea proximity deceive you.

Two weeks ago I was up there for the second time from Makarska, so I can speak from first hand. The path is not technically demanding but physically. Long pants are recommended as it's the land of the poskok similar to our viper, only it launches from the ground and most bites are below the knee or even above, but don't let that scare you, just more caution needed. The biggest problem will be heat right above Makarska to Vošac where's the best view on the Adriatic. Be aware that conditions on Sv. Jurij are like our high mountains. Warm humid air stalls at the ridge and storms are more frequent on Jurij than in Makarska few km away. Biggest issue is water. From Makarska on no staffed hut, spring or anything. Only water is filtered drip in shelter under Sv. Jurij, if it doesn't run out. Currently renovating hut under Vošac which will likely be supplied, but I doubt this year. Highly recommend this fantastic trip, we took ca 6.5 hours to summit from Veliko Brdo worth ride or taxi to. Descent steeper path to Makarska. Contact me for more info, have GPS track too.

I've already heard about the poskok from locals in Dalmatia, so I understand what this lizard is about.

So for now it's like this, that you need to dress in slightly longer clothes, most likely sweatpants (better that it's a bit hot down there for a while, so we're OK up there).

For now many thanks for all the answers, if any more questions come up (and they surely will), I'll check in again!

Slamca, you really have poskok, it's not our modras and not viper.

The mountain hut now has a new facade and inside is completely renovated. 14 people can sleep in it. The warden... excellent.nasmeh

garmont, if I understood you correctly this hut that was once a bivouac is now serviced, well that's really something new. What about the one under Vošec, at the top I know there's a bivouac, below they were renovating already 6 years ago

The hut is serviced in the season and is owned by PD Makarska.

At the top of Vošec there is a mountain hut which is unfortunately closed and not under the jurisdiction of HPD Biokovo Makarska. The mountain lodge under Vošec is under construction, its opening expected end of September this year and is owned by HPD Biokovo Makarska. It's an object more like a hotel than a mountain lodge. On request of HPD Makarska a certain number of beds will be available for hikers with all amenities offered to PD members.
