Rakitovec - Kavčič (savanna)

Access to starting point:
a) From the direction of Ljubljana:
From Primorska highway (A1) we leave the highway at Črni Kal and go on the old main road towards the sea. After 3 km on a larger crossroad we turn left towards Hrastovlje and Croatian border and after 1 km once again like this. Through Kubed we come to Gračišče, where before school building we turn left towards Rakitovec, to which signs lead us through Smokvica and Movraž. After the end of the steepness we cross Pula railway track and we turn right 1 km towards the border crossing Rakitovec, where we can park a car or 300 meters before the border crossing we turn left on a cart track and we park on a clearing approximately 2 km ahead - this shortens 100 meters height difference and half an hour of walking.

b) From the direction of Koper:
From Koper we go on the old main road towards Ljubljana. In Rižana we turn right towards Hrastovlje and we stick to the main road towards the border - for the rest, see above.

Path description:
From the parking lot at the border crossing we head north towards the crest of unvegetated peaks (Kavčič, Lipnik, Golič) on a cart track, which we follow through the forest. After half an hour of walking (2 km) we arrive at a clearing and turn onto the right cart track, which we follow all the way to the top and do not leave it (from it numerous forest paths branch off, but they are visibly overgrown). The road first ascends in serpentine fashion, then mostly with a gentle ascent leads towards the summit. Past the rocky cliff on the left after 100 meters of steep path we arrive at a notch in the living rock, thereby entering the savanna landscape of the crest of unvegetated peaks. From there we can either head on the steep goat path left straight to the summit or continue another 15 minutes on the road and across meadows reach the top. The peaks are domed and indistinct; we recognize the summit of Kavčič by the iron and wooden cross.
