Rifugio Pelizzo - Monte Mataiur/Matajur (via Dom na Matajure)

Access to starting point:
From the Tolmin–Kobarid road, a steep road branches off to the left in the village of Idrsko (or to the right from the direction of Kobarid) towards the village of Livek. We take this road, which after about 5 km of ascent brings us to the mentioned village. We continue driving on an increasingly narrow road that leads to Italy. On the other side of the border the road begins to descend, and we follow it through the villages of Polava and Čepletišče (Cepletischis) to a somewhat larger intersection, where we turn right towards the village of Matajur (Montemaggiore) and the mountain hut Rifugio Pelizzo. We faithfully follow the road, which continues to ascend relatively steeply, at the subsequent intersections in the direction of the mentioned hut. We park in the large arranged parking lot right below the hut Rifugio Pelizzo.

Route description:
From the large arranged parking lot we first ascend by stairs to the mountain hut Rifugio Pelizzo, where a beautiful view of Furlanija already opens up. At the hut we continue in the direction of the signposts for the summit of Matajur (Italian Monte Matajur) and Dom na Matajure. The path initially leads us across wide, moderately ascending grassy slopes full of mountain flowers, from which wonderful views open onto Beneška Slovenija and in good weather all the way to the Adriatic Sea. Higher up the beaten track leads us through a short section of raspberry bushes and low shrubbery, then brings us to a marked junction. Here we leave the direct direction towards the summit and turn left towards the nearby Dom na Matajure (straight ahead the path continues directly to the summit of Matajur, to the right the path towards Livek).
Immediately after this junction the path levels out completely and leads us in a comfortable transverse walk across scenic and sunny grassy slopes to the left. This part of the path is extremely pleasant, as it offers complete relaxation and enjoyment of the mountain environment with open views of the lower valleys. We follow this well-maintained and gentle path all the way to the mountain hut Dom na Matajure, which we reach from the junction in less than 10 minutes of easy walking.
From Dom na Matajure we continue right upwards in the direction of the summit. Signposts direct us onto a moderately steep footpath that runs along a wide and relatively gentle grassy ridge. With every step upwards the views of the surrounding Julijske Alpe and the peaks above the Soča become ever more extensive and beautiful. We faithfully follow this clear ridge path all the way to the very summit of the 1642-meter-high Matajur, which we reach from the hut in approximately 15 minutes of pleasant ascent.
