Access to starting point:
a) From Cerknica or Nova vas na Blokah we drive to Bloška Polica, from where we continue towards Lož and Babno Polje. In the settlement Pudob we turn right towards Snežnik, Ilirska Bistrica, Knežak and the nearby settlement Kozarišče. In Kozarišče we drive slightly left towards Snežnik and also at the following intersections follow the signs for Snežnik. At the end of Kozarišče the asphalt ends, and immediately after the bridge over Mali Obrh we turn left towards Mašun and Knežak. A long drive on a macadam road follows, on which we drive approximately 11 km to Leskova dolina. From there on the main road we continue for a little less than 1.5 km to the place where the signs for Gašperjev hrib (7 km) direct us left onto a somewhat steeper road. After a further good 5 km of driving we arrive at a marked intersection, where a road branches off to the right towards Gašperjev hrib, but we continue straight. The road takes us past Meželišče and Vodna draga and after a further 5.5 km brings us to an intersection in Sežanje, where we notice a wooden hut on the right side. At the intersection we turn right and follow the road for only a short time, as it quickly brings us to a sign prohibiting further driving.
b) We drive to Pivko, from where we continue towards Knežak. In Knežak at the marked intersection we turn left towards Mašun and the settlements Bač and Koritnice. A little further we go right towards Mašun and Koritnice (straight Bač). After Koritnice the road starts to ascend noticeably. After 18 km of driving from the main intersection in Knežak we arrive at Mašun, from where we turn right towards Sviščaki. After approximately 2 km of macadam we arrive at an intersection, where we choose the left, lower road (the right leads towards Sviščaki). On it we drive for approximately another 4 km to an intersection located immediately after the road sign 12 km. At this intersection we turn right onto a side forest road (straight Kozarišče and Leskova dolina). On it we drive approximately 1.3 km, then join the road from Leskova dolina. There follows another less than 4 km of driving to the marked intersection, where a road branches off to the right towards Gašperjev hrib, but we continue straight. This road takes us past Meželišče and Vodna draga and after a further 5.5 km brings us to an intersection in Sežanje, where we notice a wooden hut on the right side. At the intersection we turn right and follow the road for only a short time, as it quickly brings us to a sign prohibiting further driving.
c) First we drive to Ilirska Bistrica, then continue towards Sviščaki (the turn-off in the middle of Ilirska Bistrica is marked, but perhaps somewhat less noticeable). The entire regional road to Sviščaki is asphalted. After approximately 19 km of ascent we arrive at an intersection in the immediate vicinity of Planinski dom na Sviščakih, where we turn right towards Snežnik. We drive on the road on which the marked footpath also runs, and follow it to the marked intersection under Lom, which is located at an altitude of 1330 meters (a further 2.5 km to here). Here we turn right, then after 5.7 km right again. The next intersection is reached after 1.7 km, where we continue straight, and after a further 1.2 km at the intersection we turn left towards the area Sežanje. There follows approximately another 2.7 km of driving, which brings us to the intersection with the wooden hut in Sežanje, where we turn left. We drive forward for only a short time, then arrive at the sign prohibiting further driving.
Route description:
From the starting point we continue along a forest road closed to public traffic that leads through the forest. After a few minutes of easy walking it begins to descend moderately and brings us into the large grassy basin Grčovec. Here, where the road is already almost ending, we turn right. The path runs along the bottom of the valley, where we soon step onto an older cart track. Along it we notice a few rare markings, and soon we reach the edge of the forest, where "Snežnik" is written on a rock.
We head towards Snežnik along an increasingly poor cart track that quickly turns into a less trodden but well-marked path. We continue ascending through dense forest, then the path brings us into a smaller valley, along which we soon step out of the forest onto slopes overgrown with dwarf pines. The valley becomes increasingly narrower and the path increasingly steeper. Higher up the trail for a short time ascends very steeply through a narrow passage, then gradually widens but continues to lead along the bottom of the valley. The increasingly scenic path among the dwarf pines levels out higher up and brings us to a junction where we join the path from Leskova dolina.
We continue in the direction of Snežnik along the marked path that leads us from the dwarf pines onto the bare summit slope. We follow this increasingly scenic path to the summit, which we reach after a few minutes of walking.

Discussion about the trip Sežanje - Veliki Snežnik
rs5631. 07. 2011
When we reach the grassy valley of Grčovec, we head right towards the hunting observation post. Just before the post, we go left into the hill on a poorly visible trail. No markers across the grassy slope. At the top of the grassy slope, right before the forest, we veer slightly left where we spot markers for Snežnik. These markers are renewed and well followable to Snežnik summit. The steep section from Grčarc to the fork below Snežnik is quite demanding and offers no respite. Walking time 1h 44min
After the strenuous ascent, nice tea warmed us in the hut along with delicious Janja's štruklji
