Access to starting point:
From the Ljubljana-Jesenice highway, take the Lesce exit and follow the road towards Bled and then towards Bohinjska Bistrica. Continue driving towards Bohinj Lake (Ribčev laz), where you arrive at a junction, and continue straight along the left (south) side of the lake in the direction of Ukanc and Savica Waterfall. Follow this road to the lower station of the cable car on Vogel, then buy a ticket and take the cable car to the upper station, which is the starting point for our tour.
Path description:
From the upper station of the cable car on Vogel, continue right along the road that bypasses the mountain hut Merjasec on the west side. Continue the path with a gentle descent in the direction of Komna and Vogel; the wide macadam road leads us to a marked junction. Here, continue left in the direction of the Orlove glave four-seater chairlift (right downhill: Komna, Vogel, Žagarjev graben and Ukanc), which the road bypasses on the right side. From the lower station of the four-seater chairlift, the path—which continues along the transport-rescue road, the latter on the Vogel ski slope—begins to ascend more steeply. Follow the road, along which we also notice some rare blazes and with increasingly beautiful views of the Julian Alps, to the upper station of the aforementioned four-seater chairlift. Here the path levels out and brings us to the spot where a path branches off to the right to the forepeak of Orlove glave (peak with a cross); we continue straight along the transport-rescue road, which bypasses the main peak of Orlove glave on the left side.
Further on, the road descends slightly and brings us to a poorly marked junction, where we continue along the right road in the direction of Šija and Rodica. We ascend along the road for a short time longer, then it ends and brings us to a marked mountain path, along which we continue the ascent. After a few minutes of moderate ascent, we arrive at a marked junction, where a path branches off to the right towards Komna; we continue slightly left along the path that gradually transitions to the ski slope. Here the path begins to ascend more steeply and, with increasingly beautiful views, quickly brings us to the upper station of the Šija single-seater chairlift.
From the upper station, continue slightly right and ascend in a few steps to the indistinct summit of Visoki Orlov rob.
From there, the path descends slightly for a while, then begins to ascend moderately and brings us in a few minutes to a marked junction. From the junction, continue right in the direction of Vogel (left Rodica, straight Šija) and further cross the slopes of Šija and Vrh Dlani to the right. After a few minutes crossing the aforementioned slopes, the path transitions to the western slopes of Vrh Dlani, where it turns slightly left and begins to descend diagonally across steeper slopes. After a short crossing, we arrive at a ridge from which a beautiful view opens onto the Primorska side; we descend along it to Vratc (1725 m).
Here, a marked path branches off right downhill towards the mountain pasture Zadnji Vogel; we continue straight and further cross steeper slopes of the unnamed peak on the maps. A short steeper descent follows, and the path brings us to the next saddle (1668 m).
Here, another path from the mountain pasture Zadnji Vogel joins from the right; we continue slightly left along the marked footpath in the direction of Vogel. The path continues along the ridge for a short time, then turns slightly right, where it enters a belt of dwarf pines. The dwarf pines end quickly, and a moderately steep path leads us across some slopes, then returns to the ridge, where it ascends steeply for a short time. A short somewhat exposed passage follows, then the path transitions to the northern slopes of Vogel, where we may encounter snow patches in early summer. After crossing the slope below Vogel, the path ascends somewhat more steeply and brings us to a marked junction, where we continue sharply left in the direction of Vogel (straight Globoko and Komna). An ascent follows to the saddle between Vogel and Vrh Krnic, from which a beautiful view opens onto the Primorska side. Here, continue left along the panoramic ridge, along which we ascend in a few minutes to the summit of the 1922 m high Vogel.
