Access to starting point:
From the border crossing Šentilj we continue driving on the highway towards Gradec / Graz and forward towards Linz and Salzburg. Highway A9 we soon leave and we continue driving slightly right in the direction towards Dunaj / Wien and we continue driving on the highway S35. The mention we leave the highway at exit for Mixnitz, and then at the roundabout we go to the exit in the direction of Teichalm. Further, we still follow the signs for Teichalm. At the end of the settlement St. Erhard we once again turn right towards Teichalm, and then we start ascending steeply. When we reach the mountain pasture Breitalm we gradually start descending, and we follow the road to the parking lot at the lake Teichalmsee.
Path description:
On the south side of the expanded parking lot, a macadam road branches off towards the west, marked with signs for Gerlerkreuz and Tyrnauer Alm. The road splits after a few steps, and we continue sharply left (slightly right towards Tyrnauer Alm). The path ahead leads us along a gently sloping macadam road, offering beautiful views of the mountains above Teichalm and guiding us through expansive pastures. After some time, the path splits again, and we continue straight on a rougher road (slightly right on a cart track to the cottage Gerlerkogelhütte), which continues to ascend gently. When we enter the forest a little further, we climb somewhat steeper, and at a small crossing, we turn sharply right (left Angerwirt). A little further, we cross a grazing fence, then walk along the fence to a crossing by the cross Gerlerkogelkreuz.
Here, an unmarked path to Gerlerkogel branches off to the right, with about 10 minutes of ascent, but we continue straight and begin descending. A little lower, the path turns right, and to the left below us, we already see the cottage Gerlerkogelhütte, which we quickly reach.
We bypass the cottage on the right side, then continue across to a macadam road, which soon merges with another path starting at the lake Teichalmsee.
We continue straight toward Hubenhalt (right Teichalmsee) and follow the rougher road for a few minutes, then soon veer slightly right toward Nechnitz. We proceed through the forest, quickly reaching an indistinct ridge where the marked path crosses to the other side, continuing along a cart track that begins descending the northwestern slopes of the Wildkogel peak. Lower down, the cart track widens into a poorer road, continuing without significant changes in elevation, with some views opening up along the path.
Upon reaching the small Hubenhalt saddle, we turn sharply right at the junction and begin descending. Just a few dozen meters further, we turn sharply left, descending briefly before starting a diagonal ascent. A little further, we veer slightly left from the poor road onto a marked footpath, which climbs a scenic grassy slope, offering a beautiful view towards the west. The path ahead levels out and returns to the forest, where it splits once more.
We continue straight towards Gschaid-Nock (slightly right towards Nechnitz), quickly leaving the forest and proceeding across a grassy area, following a marked cart track.
At the next junction, we veer slightly right towards signs for Nockkreuz or Gschaid-Nock, then resume ascending along an increasingly scenic slope. We follow this path all the way to the cross at the mountain’s summit, where a beautiful view opens up.
Starting point - Gerlerkogelhütte 0:35, Gerlerkogelhütte - Gschaidberg 1:20.
