Sveti Ivan (Lošinj)

Description of mountain:
Sveti Ivan is the peak with its eponymous chapel above the town of Veli Lošinj.
The view from this point is breathtaking. Veli Lošinj lies right below, while in the distance one can see the islands of Pag and Rab as well as the Velebit massif; from the other side, the Italian coast is visible on clear days.
The church on the top of Kalvarija Hill was commissioned in 1755 by Antonio Sforzina as a memorial chapel for his family.
On the path leading uphill from Veli Lošinj to the church, a Way of the Cross (via crucis) was established the same year, featuring three simple chapels and wooden crosses representing the stations.
An old legend also speaks of the vantage point of Sveti Ivan. During the age of great discoveries and overseas voyages, Lošinj children waited here for ships to appear on the horizon and immediately alerted the entire village about the return of local sailors.
