Tam na Meji (Beli potok) - Punta di Montemaggiore (via Starmaz)

Access to starting point:
From the Kobarid – Bovec road in the village Žaga we turn towards the border crossing Učja. On the Italian side at the intersection where the road branches right towards the Karnica saddle and Resia, we continue left or straight in the direction of the town Videm / Udine. We follow the road to the bridge where it crosses Beli potok / Rio Bianco. We park on the left side before the bridge where there is a small parking lot. At the parking lot there are also signs indicating the end of the Resia valley and the beginning of the municipality Bardo / Lusevera. There is also a small parking lot on the other side of the bridge.

Route description:
From the parking lot before the bridge we continue along the main road and cross the bridge over Beli potok. Immediately after the bridge on the left side we will notice a cart track and mountain signposts. We head onto the mentioned cart track following the signs for Monte Starmaz and Punta di Montemaggiore (Breški Jalovec). In the initial part the cart track ascends quite steeply, then becomes gentler and crosses a somewhat more scenic slope towards the east. The cart track soon ends and we continue right along the marked path.
The path begins to ascend a rather steep slope and on a short section a steel cable is also helpful. Since the path is somewhat less trodden more caution is needed. For a short time we still ascend the steep slope, then the path turns south and soon leads us to the torrent bed. Here for some time the path runs along the torrent bed, where the well-marked path leads us over numerous rocks in the bed. From the torrent the path then turns left and ascends through the forest; at some places the slope is again quite steep so some caution is needed. We continue through the forest and later the path crosses another steep gully. Here caution is again needed as the path is less trodden and therefore somewhat more prone to slipping. Further on the path leads us through the forest and turns southwest. We continue ascending through the forest; the slopes become less steep. Such a path then leads us past the less prominent peak Starmaz.
The path here leads above the deep gully of the Starmaz stream and from the path we also get some views of the surrounding mountains. Further on the path begins to turn more southeast and continues through the forest. Later we reach again somewhat steeper slopes below the peak Monte Brieschi. The path then crosses the mentioned slopes and leads us past the ruins of the Casere Montemaggiore huts. Here the path turns right and after a short ascent leads us out of the forest. We continue slightly left over mostly grassy terrain. Over such terrain where the track is less trodden we reach the main ridge where a marked junction is indicated.
Left at this point a poorly visible path leads to the Slovenian side. Straight down the path leads towards the village Brezje (Montemaggiore); we head right in the direction of the peak Breški Jalovec (Punta di Montemaggiore).
From the junction we continue along the ridge, which is quite steep on the left southern side. The ridge turns slightly left and is followed by an ascent along an increasingly scenic path to the summit of Breški Jalovec.
