Access to starting point:
We leave the Dolenjska motorway at the Čatež ob Savi exit, then at the roundabout choose the exit towards the settlement of Dvorce. In Dvorce, turn slightly right before the bus station towards the settlement of Cerina, where the road begins to climb noticeably. Drive through Cerina to the settlement of Žejno, from where start following the signs for "Foto Ivanšek". Further on, cross several intersections, always following the directions for Foto Ivanšek. When arriving near the house where the mentioned studio is located, the route of Lojze Ogorevc's Barefoot Trail begins at the edge of the forest.
Warning regarding parking:
There are no designated public parking areas at the starting point. On the day of the organized barefoot hike (last Sunday in August), parking for hikers is arranged.
The start of the trail is located at the village boundary between Mrzlavo vas and Žejno.
Route description:
Lojze Ogorevc's Barefoot Trail starts at the bend or intersection below the Foto Ivanšek house. The trail begins along a marked cart track, where we soon reach the Čatež ob Savi - Veliki Cirnik trail. We follow the mentioned trail left into the forest (right downhill to Veliki Cirnik), but quickly leave the markings as the barefoot trail directs us left onto an unmarked but well-trodden and (during the hike) nicely cleared path. Further on, we mostly ascend gently. At several junctions, follow the direction shown in the pictures; on the day of the organized hike, organizers also guide us.
Later, we temporarily leave the forest; by the chapel and nearby weekend cottage, a nice view opens to the surroundings and Gorjanci. The trail then returns to the forest and continues without major ascents or descents. We bypass the indistinct summit named Savinje on the left (western) side and reach a vineyard with a nice view, where we notice some nettles along the path. The trail then returns to the forest and soon joins the Čatež energy walking path.
Here, we first cross a small gully, then begin ascending along roots – this section is particularly interesting if undertaken barefoot. The steepness eases after a few minutes and we join the marked trail from Čatež ob Savi, reaching it exactly at the marked junction.
Left downhill leads to the parish church in Čatež ob Savi and the parking lot at the former Čatež motel, right the trail branches to our starting point and Veliki Cirnik (return to start possible via this trail). We continue straight along the right variant of the trail leading to the church of St. Vid, as the barefoot trail follows it. Several minutes of moderate ascent follow, passing a wooden house where Lojze crafts unique wooden hiking poles. Soon we reach a tree where barefoot hikers tie the ribbon received at the trail's start.
From here, just a few steps remain to the church of St. Vid, from which an exceptional view opens over Brežice and the surrounding hills, clearly showing Kum, Lisca, Bohor, Orlica, and Ivanščica (already on the Croatian side); on good visibility, the view extends to the Kamnik-Savinja Alps.
Additional information:
On the day of the organized hike (last Sunday in August), a short musical and sports program is held at the church of St. Vid, as Lojze Ogorevc is a musician and leader of the Lojze Ogorevc ensemble, as well as an active barefoot hiker.
The hike is at your own risk.
The description refers to the condition in May 2026, the photos are from various periods.
