What's the condition of the safety gear on the path from Suhodolnik to Kalška gora?

Whoa, thanks for the comments. I've been there 3 times myself, never crumbled and I concluded it's not that problematic.

I'll put bike helmets on the kids and friends. They are more occasional climbers, so investing in helmets isn't really worthwhile.

Yes, I'm aware of that, especially for tomorrow when the forecast changes slightly from day to day. But additional opinions are always welcome, thanks!

One more question - from my memory the path via Okrešelj to the saddle is not very exposed. Maybe only when crossing under Brana wall, so as far as I know helmet is not as essential as e.g. in Turski Gully. Am I wrong?

How reliable are the weather forecasts?

For tomorrow (Saturday, 20.8.2011) some thunderstorms are forecasted in the mountains in the afternoon, for Kamnik Alps after 3 pm. If we go to Kamnik Saddle with kids from Logar Valley, we'll probably hardly be back in the valley by then despite an early start, so I'm a bit worried.

Thanks for the answers!

Although already said in several places, it won't hurt: according to several reports the fixed cables have been repaired and are in excellent condition (latest info from 24.8.2008).

This one is really good, yeah. I just collect advice, but apparently I have 3x less fitness and climbing experience. My only advantage (over marea) is that I've done this tour 2x. Marea, leave the self-belay kit at home, it will only hinder you.

Griha, I partly agree with you, but you never know who's reading and asking, so better to warn extra. Obviously you don't know fear, me neither (talking about the gully and similar paths), but I've seen it many times with my companions and you don't root it out just like that. Our comments were also encouraging and no one discouraged this path. Of course you can do all paths without a helmet too (I'll ignore other things...), but once is enough for a rock to hit your head. I too hid from rockfall during one of my two traversals of Turski žleb, which two guys above me were happily dislodging. No helmet then. Not anymore today.

Self-belaying though for hikers with at least some experience in my opinion isn't necessary. Check out this debate too.

Well, I did the same as your dear, marea. I took my chosen one and also my sister-in-law on the mentioned tour, which was the first high mountain experience for both (after all, it was for me too a couple years before nasmeh ). Without self-belaying and also without helmet. Stupid, I know, but back then I was still young (and dumb). The path is super. True, it can scare you, but only in the gully, which looks scary at first glance, but nothing to fear. The path is well described here. On PZS forum I also saw that the cables are already repaired. Start early, safe steps and no fear, it'll be fine! Survive the gully, then the "enjoyment" begins, especially Kotliči are great.

Warning - apparently one wire rope on Rjavina is torn (lightning) and they haven't fixed it yet. Info from 18.8.08 from the keeper at Staničev dom.
