Regarding the map though approximately like this- if you don't know how to use it it's the same if you don't have it (yeah you also need some special gray cell to read a map), but it's very sensible to inquire beforehand and prepare for the trip, especially if it's your first time and you prepare some reserve plan, in case something goes differently than you originally planned.
