my big wish is to go somewhere, but I don't dare alone (have three kids), waiting for uncle to take pity and make time for me. If not, I've already signed up for basic winter hiking course in Kamnik, slowly since I have time, I'll know everything, and experience and years also bring something good...
By what measures to buy ice axe by weight, by length (I mean alpine ice axe)??

Thanks, I'm thinking of some course first but would like to learn a bit more, interested where in which book I would get the most described and explained about:
• Types of snow avalanches and their characteristics
• Factors triggering snow avalanches
• Recognizing potentially dangerous areas
• Decision making and acting in the avalanche world
• Rescue in an avalanche accident
• use of ice axe

Since I'm a newbie I don't know where I could go in winter time that is not too dangerous, I was on Stol when there was still snow, and the path was easy trodden.. nothing to climb not too steep (via Žirovnica path). I go to Kališče over winter but I want more, where there is a path, where there are people,.. a bit higher

Triglav via Prag,Grintovec from Kamniška Bistrica,Mangart from Italian route

I'm posting because you'll know here where to go in these conditions, in snow to which mountain that's fairly safe, I have fitness, but no climbing?
