Origin of the Name
After the War of the Pacific, in 1879, Chile conquered from Peru two of its southern departments bordering the Republic of Bolivia, while with this latter nation it did the same with two of its departments; it was then necessary to explore the new territories and check their limits with neighboring countries. The formation of a Desert Exploration Commission was decreed in April 1883.
