Description:
July 2015
We ascend to Val Masino along the provincial road and, past Cataeggio, park in San Martino. Reaching the Val di Mello parking lot (shuttle bus in summer season), we proceed along the track into the valley, passing Ca' di Carna (1061 m) and reaching Cascina Piana (1092 m). We continue, keeping left, until the marked junction where we leave the track to take the path on the left to the Allievi-Bonacossa hut. The path, recently improved on the steepest sections with convenient steps, climbs in the first tiring stretch on the left (our) side of the valley, then crosses the Zocca stream on a nice bridge, also newly placed. The further ascent to the Zocca casera (half-hidden, on the right, at 1725 m) offers little respite, then begins to have less severe slopes, exiting the cool conifer forest and diagonally crossing the right flank of the valley, until emerging onto the corridor leading to the Zocca plain, which by its shape gives the name to the valley (2016 m). Crossing the plain on the right side, we reach the foot of the last wide glacial plinth separating us from the upper cirque of the valley. The markers guide us through the section where the track seems to disappear, until we find it again and, following it, laboriously climb the plinth, crossing two small valleys and, in the last stretch, heading left to the edge of a marked gully descending toward the plain. We are now in sight of the Allievi and Bonacossa huts (2385 m), which we reach after crossing, continuing left (northwest), a streamlet.
