Description:
18-01-2023: Buoro di Ciano. The natural cave is located on the north slope of Montello, in the hamlet of Ciano del Montello in the province of Treviso. The Montello area lacks surface hydrology as rainwater and meltwater penetrate the karst subsurface. This phenomenon generates a deeper water circulation that in turn constitutes rock springs rich in water all year round. An emblem is Buoro di Ciano, a natural tunnel about 16m deep, also known as Fontana del Buoro, as a pure water spring gushes in it, though currently scarce. Although relatively small in size, the cave is wrapped in an ancient legend that makes it known to many. The discovery of ancient stone archaeological finds testifies to human settlement in the area from approximately 10,000 years ago, almost undoubtedly due to the presence of the sacred spring. It was already the earliest local populations that attributed to Buoro a fantastic image of a divine place inhabited by fairies, as water and cave are elements closely linked to ancient fertility cults of the earth. In particular, the place was associated with the nymph of the Montello caves “Ciane”, who according to classical myth had been transformed into a spring after rebelling against the rape of Persephone by Pluto, god of the Underworld. A legend tells that one day three peasants, while at the spring to spoil the water so no one could use it anymore, were surprised by the appearance of the nymph who managed to stop them from their intent. From that moment the divine creature turned the three men into cruel wolves, probably referable to those of the Capitello dei Lovi legend. It is said that after this fact the waters of Buoro became magically clear and rich in beneficial properties, so much so that for centuries postpartum women weakened by breastfeeding drank them to increase the quality and quantity of their milk. Finally, regarding the propitiatory cult of earth's fertility, in the Middle Ages Buoro was consecrated to the French San Mamertus, protector of the harvest. He, after being appointed archbishop of Vienna, was the first to re-legitimize pagan rogations. Also in this location at 02:30 on October 27, 1918, the 12th Italian assault unit crossed the Piave and remained isolated on Isola Verde, later renamed Isola dei Morti in Moriago della Battaglia.
