Description: Fjaðrárgljúfur is a 2 km long and up to 100 meters deep canyon through which the Fjaðrá River flows. Its steep walls are mainly formed by palagonite from the Ice Age, about 2 million years old. When the glacier retreated, a lake formed beneath it, with its outlet at the site of today's canyon. It was strong enough to erode the hard palagonite layer. Glacial rivers brought a lot of sediment that gradually filled the lake until only the river remained. Today, much less water flows through the canyon than in the past.
