Description: The Türkenschanze (Türkenschlössel) is the ruin of a fortification in the Carinthian Vellach Valley, directly below Bad Eisenkappel. It was built in the 15th century as a valley barrier to protect Eisenkappel and the Seeberg saddle to the north against Turkish incursions. However, the fortification could not withstand the Turkish assault, as the garrison was too weak and it could moreover be bypassed. The Turks laid Kappel, as the place was then still called, in ruins and ashes in 1473.
