Straddling the provinces of L'Aquila and Teramo, it falls within the territories of the municipalities of Isola del Gran Sasso, Santo Stefano di Sessanio, Castelvecchio Calvisio, Carapelle Calvisio, and Calascio. Its characteristic is its geomorphological duality compared to Monte Camicia: the Aquila slope facing Campo Imperatore is rocky and strongly jagged (making it a highly evocative slope), while the opposite Teramo slope is almost grassy and less rugged although with greater elevation gain and equally steep. Slow and incessant erosion phenomena due to spring snowmelt, rain, and the extremely friable rock type have over time produced a vast alluvial scree (dejection cone) on the Aquila slope up to the base of the Campo Imperatore plateau known as Ghiaione del Prena.
