Description: Merkenstein Castle was built in the 12th century. In 1141, a Hugo von Merkenstein appears for the first time. In 1180, there is a letter that Siboto von Hernstein sent to his vassal Ortwin von Merkenstein. Until about 1322, the Merkensteiners sat on the castle. Then followed Otto von Gerlos. After Konrad von Werd came the Wallseers, who owned Merkenstein for almost 100 years and enlarged the facility. Due to debts and family disputes, they had to cede the lordship to Stephan von Hohenberg in 1440. In the battles between Emperor Frederick III and the Hungarians, the Hohenbergers changed sides several times. Two years later, the castle lord reconciled with the emperor and sold him the fortress.
