Description: 08-06-2022: Route Km. 13,500 Elevation gain mt. 713. Stavoli (Stai di Muec), Moggesse di là and Moggessa di quà are three villages in the municipality of Moggio Udinese; Stavoli and Moggessa di quà are reachable only on foot while Moggessa di là is reached by a forest road connecting Grauzaria, Borgo di Mezzo and Morolz. In Stavoli most dwellings are in good condition and periodically visited by their owners, making the village unique. The inhabitants also organize the village festival at the end of June. The Moggesse were more affected by the earthquake and there are numerous ruins and abandoned houses; some houses have recently been renovated bringing a bit of life to the villages; furthermore, in Moggessa di là there has been the refreshment point “Alle quattro fontane” for a few years, open in summer and on spring and autumn weekends. The starting point of the ring is the village of Campiolo di Sopra, where the signs for trail CAI 417 are found. Some parking spots for the car are just before the village, on the left side of the road. A CAI sign indicates the beginning of the trail that descends among the houses until reaching the left bank of the Glagnò stream, whose waters will accompany us for most of the hike. After the initial descent the trail continues on a false flat, with some short landslide sections. After about 30 minutes of walking we reach a railway underpass, followed by a metal footbridge that crosses a small waterfall. A little further on, the CAI trail joins the trail descending from the parking lot at the end of the asphalt road that continues after the houses of Campiolo di Sopra, allowing to shorten the hike. We continue along the trail, passing a water spring (“La gote da la mont di Palis”) near which rock campions can be observed. We thus reach the footbridge over the Glagnò stream (about 35 minutes from the start) which allows us to reach the right bank of the stream; here the ring begins clockwise allowing us to visit the three villages. We begin to climb along the stepped mule track; after about 20 minutes of ascent we reach a beautiful belvedere at 430m which allows us to see Moggessa di quà. The trail climbs to the plateau hosting the houses of Stavoli (1 hour and 30 minutes from the start). Some exposed and/or landslide sections are protected with metal footbridges and handrails. Following the CAI signs we cross the village and reach the fountain/trough at the end of the village, towards sella Dagna. To continue towards Moggessa di là, we recross the village reaching the wooden hut that serves as a refreshment point. We cross the meadows turning left, aiming at a wooden sign indicating “Moggessa”. The trail, marked with CAI signs, descends gradually towards the bed of the Glagnò stream, which is reached in about 30 minutes from Stavoli. We go up the bed for about ten meters and ford the stream, either moving over some stones or barefoot. On the opposite side a cairn marks the trail that climbs steeply until emerging in the meadows close to the first houses of Moggessa di là, where for a few years it is possible to stop and refresh at the Ristoro “Alle quattro fontane”. We cross the village, pass the little church and follow the indications of the CAI 418 mule track in the direction of Moggio. The mule track with some ups and downs reaches Moggessa di quà, crossing the Rio del Mulin. In the village (about 30 minutes from Moggessa di là) we follow the indications for Moggio (CAI 418) and after passing the ruins of some houses just outside the village we leave the CAI 418 trail to follow the trail indicated by a wooden sign with the writing “Campiolo”. The trail is not marked but is excellently trodden; with some ups and downs it heads south and with a steep descent section on an eroded slope it reaches the Glagnò stream again (45 minutes from Moggessa di quà), a hundred meters upstream of the bridge traveled in the first part of the hike. We ford the stream (barefoot or looking for a passage between the stones 10 meters downstream) and continue on the trail that runs along the right bank of the stream, until reaching the bridge. Here the ring closes and we return to Campiolo di Sopra on the CAI 417 trail traveled on the way out.
