Description: A walk along the "chess flower meadow" in the middle Feistritztal is currently a botanical experience. The otherwise inconspicuous meadow areas near Großsteinbach are discoloring as thousands of chess flowers with their strikingly checkered blossoms sprout from the ground. The color spectrum of the hanging flower bells ranges from strong violet to light brownish-pink. Anyone who wants to see this rarity should set off soon, as the flowering window lasts only 1 to 2 weeks. After this short period, the original plant disappears again into the green of the meadow grasses. In the early morning, there are often water droplets on the flowers, hence the folk name "Rotzglockn". The chess flower is highly protected and occurs throughout Austria only here in Großsteinbach and in southern Burgenland.
