Description:
TOPOĽČIANSKY CASTLE
Topoľčiansky Castle is the ruin of a medieval castle from the 13th century. The castle rises on a spur of dolomitic limestone at 525 m a.s.l. in the Nitra Region, in the southeastern part of Považský Inovec, directly above the village of Podhradie. The oldest written mention dates from 1235, where it is listed as royal property. Later it changed many owners. From the 13th century it was the center of a castle estate with 26 villages. At the beginning of the 18th century, it was badly damaged by imperial troops during the uprising of Francis II Rákoczi. In the mid-18th century it was still repaired, but after moving the estate administration to Tovarníky it began to decay. At the end of the 19th century, the main tower was completed in romantic style and part of the fortification was conserved. The last family to own it were the Stummers. 15.3.2020
