Description:
The relatively large castle is located on a spur-like knoll of the Hiesberg, above the small town of Zelking and the Melk River. The building site was artificially excavated and partially widened. The high medieval ring castle is an extensive rectangular complex that only turns its far-visible northwest narrow side to the valley. It is about 70 m long and 32 m wide in the front part. Its oldest parts date from the first half of the 13th century. The castle was surrounded by a low ring wall enclosing a narrow zwinger. On the mountain side, which due to the given elevation was the weak point of the fortification, a neck ditch was cut deep into the granite rock. In the west, a ramp leads to the main entrance.
