Trail of the Seven Waterfalls - Buzet

Print
velkavrh17. 06. 2013 15:27:57
Early in the morning we set off from Kranj with the bus - savski planinci. We parked the bus in the Istrian town of Buzet. Still a firefighter photo and at nine we started the trail. The start is on the right side of the bridge by the little river Mirna uphill. Here the river gives quite a miserable appearance. Almost a wild stream, to which a bit higher the stream Mirna has been actually tamed into a canal, in which I saw no fish, only frogs had their concert. Both watercourses are supposed to be defined as streams until joining. Soon we come into the forest and soon spot the first waterfall, which the trees hide from us. Now the steep ascent begins on damp ground. Luckily we have plastic cables along the trail. You don't see that in our mountains. We come under interesting high overhanging walls where anchors for climbers are made. Further on the second waterfall soon shows itself. Here even wires for climbers are lowered over the rocks. The third waterfall has a huge pool, almost a small lake. Now we head into Istrian wilderness. We walk across unmown grassy patches that no one mows and forest slowly overgrows them. In between ruins of long abandoned houses and abandoned orchards are visible. We reach the village of Kuhari and turn towards the abandoned village Kotle. Here supposedly lives permanently only one person and currently an open inn which already has a sign - for sale. At the bridge that leads to the village we spot a water fairy tale. The stream carved itself here through white rock a beautiful path. It's full of small pools and basins, at the end it flows further with a big waterfall. Here we soak tired feet in pleasantly refreshing water. We enjoy a thick hour. After the break we set off further along the left side of the stream and check out the last waterfall with a huge pool. The water is surprisingly cloudy-emerald colored. The rocks over which it flows color it. Over some kind of gorge we return by the river on the opposite bank to Buzet. Several times we crossed the stream over big stones until they joined. Because we spent a lot of time walking in shade and by water it was still tolerable despite the great heat. We walked actively five hours. Exactly at the same time Istrian hikers were doing this trail. There were supposed to be four hundred of them. We really weren't bored.

Yesterday on a nice April day and after two years again with Škofja Loka hikers to Croatian Istria on the Seven Waterfalls trail. This time a month and a half earlier than two years ago. We filled a whole bus and the tireless guide Slavica Laznik was very happy about it. We drive to Buzet and start near the Favorit brewery. Then along the channels of the Mirna river, where there is almost no water at this time. Nevertheless, there are many mallard ducks to see and even a grey heron and a river gull. Soon we cross Mirna and after a while over a wooden bridge that announces the start of the trail, we approach the first waterfall. The waterfalls are named and I will subtitle them in the photos. Only the name of the waterfall in the village of Kotle I couldn't find out. The trail is excellently marked throughout, but still you have to watch not to get lost. The Istrian hikers have been very hardworking. The whole trail is newly rebuilt and equipped with safety devices. Two years ago this wasn't there yet, only a short section had some cables. Over Napoleon's bridge, which is a special attraction and excellently preserved, we descend to the village of Kotle. Once it was a large flowering village, so to speak with streets. The village has no permanent residents. You reach the village on gravel road. A small tavern - konoba is operating. Beside the tavern some local woman in the first house opposite sells even homemade brandies and liqueurs. Mainly you can still see the shine of the former large village, reminiscent of mighty buildings, which are mostly abandoned or in ruins. Some houses have been renovated and even offered as apartments. Some are still used as weekend homes. Below under the tavern is the picturesque fifth waterfall, whose name I don't know. Here the river has carved channels into the white karst stone and created small waterfalls and pools. At the end it drops deep below in front of the mill, which hasn't operated for a long time, into a nice pool. From Kotle we return on another path and visit the remaining two waterfalls and after crossing the stream three times return to Buzet. This is the time of many orchids - lady's slippers. We found three kinds. The most beautiful is of course the spotted lady's slipper.
We started in Buzet.1
Start of the path.2
First waterfall Zagon.3
Second waterfall Bačva.4
Third waterfall has little water - Vela Peč.5
Under the waterfall there is always a large pool or pond.6
Fourth waterfall - Mala Peč.7
The lake below it is called Green-Blue Lake.8
The path is excellently secured.9
The gorge is surrounded by vertical rocks.10
Equipped climbing areas at a few spots.11
They know how to make a safe path.12
We climb out of the gorge - Buzet is visible.13
This is how we admired the fourth waterfall and lake.14
Then past karst dolines to Napoleon's bridge.15
This is the famous Napoleon's bridge.16
Past the ruins of former homesteads.17
Deep below we spot the village Kotle, where our next waterfall is.18
Here at least it seems to me the most beautiful.19
Here the stream has carved numerous small basins into the white karst rock, created mini waterfalls and pools, and finally cascades over an overhang to form a beautiful waterfall.20
21
This is the waterfall that you cannot really get close to.22
On the other side is an abandoned mill.23
The village has no permanent residents.24
Typical Istrian house from bygone times.25
Abandoned houses overgrown with greenery.26
Numerous ruins recall the former owners.27
Some are nevertheless renovated and offered as apartments - they even built a pool.28
A bit ahead of ourselves. This is the last waterfall - Grjok. We reach it by backtracking slightly on the path - but it is well marked.29
The waterfall is rather small - below there is a large pool.30
This is the Zelenščak waterfall - the sixth in sequence.31
There is a pool below.32
Then just the return, where we cross the stream three times.33
We didn't get our feet wet.34
I always add at least three of the nicest flowers from the tour if something is blooming at the time. This is the time of orchids - This is pikastocvetna kukavica - it is rare here.35
Škrlatnomodro ptičje seme is beautiful. I don't see it here. It is supposed to bloom at the end of grain fields sometimes.36
And also a beautiful decoration of cold, damp gorges. A beautiful flower that I haven't seen here. This is bledorumeni koreničnik.37

jedriličar, thanks! I read everything you forwarded. Indeed the history of Kotle settlement is very interesting. I didn't know the settlement was so flourishing and that there was another mill. I know the view of the waterfall is nice from the mill, but we didn't climb down there. I'm very interested in the history of these Istrian places. Best regards!

what is the difficulty of the trail, given that there are plastic "cables", and how safe are they?
thanks

velkavrh26. 04. 2015 20:42:29
Only a couple of old cables are conditionally plastic. What is newly secured are steel cables with steel posts. The trail is rated as easy, safe.In wet it's slippery. But it's a bit longer - there and back with stops around five to six hours.
That is how these new wire ropes look.1

On Tuesday (16.4.) we walked this trail. After the March drought, when water was more dripping and trickling than flowing and roaring, the waterfalls and pools are again sufficiently full of water to look nice... nasmeh

Currently the waterfalls are quite a bit more watery than in the photos above. When crossing Mirna I had to take off my shoes 2 times. Apart from that trifle the trail is BP.

With small kids count considerably more than 3 hours for 13 km. The trail is mostly easy, but not everywhere. To a couple of waterfalls you have to descend a steep bank, risk of slipping, also you need to be careful around the pools.

Hi! Does maybe someone know what the state of waterfalls/pools is in this dry period? Does it make sense to go?

I doubt it. Once, at the end of August I messed up like that, and it wasn't even such drought as this year. There wasn't even a drop of water. Wait for proper rain.

Third time's the charm. Yesterday after ten years -back then I was still with Savski planinci here-in between already with PD Škofja Loka -again here. After Gorenjska it's a bit too icy, so we postponed from March to February and didn't regret it. Start was as always from the brewery in Buzet by the regulated stream Mirna, which currently at least in this regulated part (canal) is almost without water. What there is is all frozen. Then past the Tambasin spring along the climbing part of the gorge to the other side of the stream. I don't know exactly when there was such water power here that it collapsed the little bridge-for now it's not repaired yet. Because there was water it was easy to cross to the other side over stones. In case of high water you'd already have to take off shoes here. These climbing sections are interesting-I think high water broke something here too. So we reach the first waterfall-Zagon. Impresses the next waterfall Bačva and Green-Blue Lake. Then we reach the next waterfall Vela peč-35 m -this is the highest on the Draga stream. With the Mala peč waterfall this side of waterfalls ends. It actually ends in the settlement Kotli, where at least for me the most magnificent waterfall-named simply Kotli with attractive ending -mill, which sadly is decaying. I saw it's even for sale. Here water carved a whole bunch of little cauldrons, pools and ends with a waterfall that falls down into a pool. To those cauldrons you can descend right or left side. In village Kotli currently no residents. The pub is closed. Now the once flourishing settlement with many large houses is more a ghost village. Some renovated for weekenders. Some even rented out. Interesting that such a large village had no church. To get to Kotli you go even through village Selce and hamlet Pengari. To Kotli through several abandoned hamlets or villages-Kuhari, Martinčići, Šćaveti and Glistonija. Here many ruins of once mighty homesteads are visible, now just ruins overgrown by ivy and forest. Supposedly people left these places already before WWI and went mostly to America. After longer break we went to the remaining two waterfalls -Zelenščak and Grljak. Had to cross the stream three times. Currently crossable without issues. If more water, can't without taking off shoes. Whole trail done in about five hours. Exposed parts secured with railings and cables, also still with electric cables that were here already ten years ago. In between visible also grated entrances to mine shafts. The gorge is paradise for climbers-routes in this rock are very demanding. In Buzet we finished with bobici stew in a nice inn.
We have arrived in Buzet.1

It's been at least thirty years. We started at the Lupoglav railway station and headed south through the undergrowth to what I remember as the dry gorge named Cikitaja or something similar. We continued to the village of Kotle and further to Rocko polje
Does anyone know more about this, where it is and if the name is correct for this dry stream bed.

On Saturday our PD also visited the seven waterfalls near Buzet. We had excellent participation and weather and enjoyed the spring weather and nature observation. There was just the right amount of water, it's a shame if you arrive at the wrong moment when there's too much or too little water...
