ANKOGEL-3.252m//27/08/2017
When we enjoyed our first Three-Thousander yesterday,,and since we were so enthusiastic about this experience and admiring neighbor Ankogel from Sauleck,,,on descent to the valley in wonderful Alpine town Mallnitz we decided for another feat,,,We're going even higher,,Overnight in Mallnitz and at 8730 take gondola to upper cable car station, to Hanoverhaus hut continuing towards Ankogel over rock slabs and glaciers,,.Special feature of this ascent is reaching two Three-Thousanders in one go ,,as the path goes over Kleine Ankogel which is (3096m),,I think all next words are superfluous,,Just the feeling we had like being in Drežnica as we met large group of hikers on Ankogel from Kobarid and Drežnica,,,

16.2.2019, SATURDAY

We decided for a shorter tour to the summit, so with gondola. First to upper station, then nicely onwards towards the summit. Terrain nothing special, for early February extremely warm, snow turned into one big alpine pool. Otherwise classic winter gear.

Some from the group skied, some hiked. Skiers descended west side of the mountain to Böckstein, offering almost 2000 vertical meters of skiing. Others back same path to upper station and down valley with gondola. To summit and back with breaks took 6h.

Does anyone know the conditions, is winter gear needed? Thanks

Last week from top of Hochalmspitze all neighboring peaks were still partially snowy, especially in glacier area and surroundings if nothing else. But given warm conditions snow was soft and nicely walkable. I had winter gear with me but didn't use it anywhere.

While camping around Austria last week, my friend and I conquered this peak among others. With the first cable car we went a bit above Hannoverhaus and started crossing on granite slabs towards both Ankogels. Just when we were at the top, fog was rushing over it, but we had nice views a bit lower. We also met some Slovenians, they were the only ones we met anywhere in Austria.

For a few minutes it also cleared around Hochalmspitze7

Today 16.9.2023 from Mallnitz via ski slope and path to Hannoverhaus and then on to Ankogel. Despite poor forecast super sunny day. Path no problem, cross just one snowfield, icy in morning, later no issues. Back to valley by gondola, price 24€ per person. In short wonderful day without crowds. Nice mountaineer's greetingnasmeh

On Saturday 4.7.2026 we hikers walked a beautiful and demanding path to Ankogel. On the way there was another larger snowfield, which however did not pose difficulties on the path. Return ticket for the gondola is 38 eur.

Nice mountaineering greeting.

I was on Ankogel on 24-25.7.2026. My second 3000m peak in life, after Petzeck three weeks ago. The latter is a bit easier, but both are technically quite easy. Just a lot of altitude.
Parked down by the cable car, slept in Hannoverhaus, next morning to the summit and 2km descent to the car. Wonderful. Recommend.

Met Slovenians, Croats and one mountaineer who went barefoot to the top zmeden see the photos. In my opinion that's crazy and pointless. Both his feet were bloody zmeden

Why are the Austrian Alps completely green almost up to 3km, while in Slovenia already at some 2200m plants become rarer?

Did you reserve the accommodation in advance?

Greetings!

For Ankogel I reserved online 1 day before. Many huts in Austria have online reservations, but for 1 or 2 there is always a place. Similar to Slovenia, some beds cannot be reserved because they must be free for paragliders. When I slept there, the neighboring bed was free but online it was all full.

https://www.hut-reservation.org/reservation/book-hut/121/wizard

The hut keeper told me that he recommends calling if everything is booked online and then check if there is any place free.

Otherwise you can take the cable car all the way to the hut. Return ticket 39e. But I'm not interested in something like that. I came to walk on the trails and not just get to the top as soon as possible. nasmeh

''Why are the Austrian Alps completely green almost up to 3km, while in Slovenia already at some 2200m plants become rarer?''

Because gneiss and granite unlike limestone do not dissolve well in water and do not let water through like limestone. That's why it leaks from everywhere and everything is wet.
