Hello! I'm interested in what the conditions are like on Ankogel? How much snow is left? LP

This morning I head over Ljubelj, at Celovec turn onto AC and down at Spittal. I continue towards Grossglockner but at Obervellach turn towards Mallnitz. I knew that due to storms that Saturday evening snow had fallen up there and indeed the surrounding mountains were a bit 'dusted' We know what 'a bit' means up there. And it was so, when I arrived up by Ankogel cable car, everything was white! Well, that doesn't look good... Still I set off after three Austrians who went before me. One of them turns back a bit before the signpost where the Ankogel path branches from the main path. The others, we continue towards Ankogel. On the glacier one of them lends me a pole. Quite welcome. It would have been useful on that snow even on the path. I was a bit worried about the descent. Just before the final ridge we stop briefly, chat, then go for it! I knew the tour was demanding but it still surprised me. Scrambling on rocks on the really exposed ridge with the feeling that one wrong step sends you into the abyss is quite adrenaline-pumping. The gully that seemed demanding to me is kindergarten by comparison. Luckily almost no snow on the ridge. Well, I make it to the top! Right before it the last hardest detail: climbing the demanding exposed jump (which especially troubles on descent). Then summit with cross! From the cross I continue on the exposed ridge to the true summit. There I enjoy the great view (behind Grossglockner, ahead Hochalmspitze, right Säuleck,... wider view sadly blocked by clouds) and sun rays. I admire the group coming up from Maltatal (part of whose reservoir is visible from the top), supposedly even harder from there. Worth it, real treat! Every nice thing ends once and it's time to go down. After that demanding jump the descent path was no longer so hard and soon I was at the saddle. Then down, snow was almost melted so worries about descent unnecessary. I bypassed the glacier this time (carefully, friable and shifting rocks!). On the way to Hannoverhaus a slight gust, a beer fits there then down on foot! Path to mid cable car station nothing special, further to lower quite interesting. One of the best tours so far!

I plan to go this Saturday, weather will be OK, but might snow a bit more by then, how long did the path from upper station to valley take you?

From upper station (Hannoverhaus) to lower station (parking) sign says three hours. I did it in two and a half hours including break at mid station.

Since Ankogel tempts me too for some time, interested how much walking from upper gondola station to summit and how is path marking, good? I know Slovenian Alps well, but not abroad yet. Smart to overnight in hut and go to summit next day?

Since we want to go to Ankogel, we're interested in the path conditions and if the gondola goes to Hannoverhaus and when. Also if the snowfield to Ankogel summit is passable without crampons at this time.

@gorski svizec: see my description above. In August no winter gear needed. That glacier tongue just before turning to Little Ankogel ridge can be crossed with poles too. Can bypass it alternatively but very carefully due to loose rocks. If fresh snow like I had, no winter gear helps anyway.

Today's visit to Ankogel with group. Relatively easy peak over 3000m, enough space on summit ridge. Nice sunny day, no crampons or ice axe, snowfield crossed.

Hello! Unfortunately TK - Gora portal not available, so using this existing portal for description and some info on this mountain. After nearly one-year break of this page, time to refresh it a bit. Guides Davorin and Nadja had this hike in program from year start. Sunday 28.07., from Tolmin early morning via Predil to AC to Spital an der Drau. Exit AC to Mallnitz to lower station Ankogel cable car. Ticket to top and back to valley 24 eur. Group discount over 15 people, one ticket free. With one transfer between cable cars on mountain, arrive at hiking path start. Path not demanding as written, but don't underestimate. Caution crossing snowfields. Especially careful from snow to granite slabs, rubber soles wet and can slip on smooth granite slabs. Walked on these whole hike. From upper station 2.5 hours with short breaks. For snowfields in this heat no ice axe or crampons needed. If short skis to strap, take them. Good for fun slides on glacier and snowfields. Glacier no crevasses now. Nice tour, esp in pleasant fun group. Thanks guides for leading and tips, greetings to others. LP and safe in mountains!
