WARNING:
new Hannoverhaus (opened 2014) is located 70 vertical meters below the upper cable car station.

In older descriptions and maps the old one is still mentioned,
which was above the station at the chapel.

status July 2015
first gondola ride at 8:30, up at 9:00 (a bit late, sun is already high, better to sleep in the hut the evening before and head to the summit early morning) 25 EUR return adult

path without special features (winter gear stayed in the backpack), in wet it must be quite "tricky"

Yesterday I set off for (romantic) conquering of 3000er from the valley...Well, up to the upper gondola station
there's not much hill romance (forest,road,ski slope)...
Then onwards from Hannoverhaus it's a different song...Given the high approach with gondola, the visit to Ankogel was also appropriate...

After over four years I climbed Ankogel again, this time in winter, of course on skis, Rok kept me company. At 8am it was pretty cold, temp in the valley -14 degrees, but luckily inversion and warmer higher up. Took gondola to Hannoverhaus hut 2565m, left the ski slope and headed to summit. All smooth until the ridge of Little Ankogel, very windy and freezing there. Left skis at ~2900m and continued on foot. Conditions on Little Ankogel summit much better, so we went to main top 150m higher. Put on crampons, took ice axes, ascended slowly and carefully, made it around 2pm. Didn't stay long on top, cold, descended soon to where skis were sunning. nasmeh

Descent good too, skied to start/valley at 1200m.

Yesterday we headed to Ankogel, due to bad afternoon weather forecast we took cable car up. Path to half of little summit dry, from there frozen, fresh snow, continuation safe with crampons. Some turned at little summit. Snow softened fast in sun of course. On return fog formed. Used some snow patches for quick descent. Quite a few people, those without crampons turned back.

Today I was the only one who skinned up from Mallnitz to Ankogel summit. Some were there but on skis from other valley.

On way to Ankogel from Mallnitz winter gear actually not needed anymore, gaiters welcome though. Only two snow tongues on section from Hannover hut to Ankogel/Celler Weg junction, can bypass them.

Snowfield approx. 10-15 minutes below the summit, rotten and collapsing.

That was the scene today with winter temperatures.

... now you don't. Waiting (40-50 minutes) directly under the shoulder until visibility on the ridge stabilizes at least a bit.

On the path you only need to cross a short flat snow patch. The rest is all dry.

Well, with PD Medvode I conquered the fourth three-thousander of the High Tauern. There are still about ten waiting, with the highest Grossglockner. There were enough of us for a whole bus. We rode the gondola cable car to 2600 m. They have two gondola cable car stations. Price for the ride is 25 euros. After a short ride, a three-hour crossing of this typical High Tauern scree awaited us - as if some stonemason had stacked them. We crossed two already softened snowfields. On Little Ankogel we split into several groups and with multi-minute intervals started ascending to the pointed summit. At the top a cross awaited us and a sharp little ridge that offers just enough space for rest and views.
