After two years I returned again under this mighty mountain. Back then I didn't make it to the summit due to a minor slip and a strong thunderstorm. This time everything went without problems nasmeh
It was really wonderful... Views are phenomenal.

On Friday 19.9.2014 conquered Marmolada - Punta Penio from Passo Fedaia via glacier. Nice path, well trodden on glacier and summit part. The wall to climb via fixed cable to summit ridge was snow-free. From pass to summit (cross) took us 3h. On top no views due to rising fog covering summit 1/2h too early, but trip wonderful anyway.

The best view of the mountain you're heading to is from a neighboring peak or at least a nearby ridge, so in the afternoon before the ascent we climbed to Porta Vescovo to the Rifugio Luigi Gorza.

The clear morning promised a nice day, and the ascent to Forcella Marmolada was quick. The two snow patches under Forcella were no issue. There were few people, so we approached the summit fast; it wasn't crowded on arrival. After a short stop, we descended towards the glacier and met a forum acquaintance for the first time in person—it was nice. Below the rock step we put on crampons and descended the glacier to the hut, which was quite busy, but we quickly got our earned refreshment. Black clouds from the west, so we took the cable car down before the rain hit the car.

Mighty mountain, don't underestimate it.

Ascent two days ago. Up the glacier, down the ferrata.

On the otherwise trodden path there was a crevasse about 30-40 cm wide. I bypassed it 1-2 m off the path where it was only 10-20 cm wide, pulled myself over with the ice axe and got back to the path with its help.

BTW, ice axe is highly, highly recommended for the glacier. Crampons are mandatory anyway—a German guy and a German woman on the summit asked me if they could go down the glacier 'ohne Steigeisen'. I think my 'nein' was one of the most decisive in my life. eek mežikanje

Ferrata down the ridge: no problems for those experienced with them, maybe a few tricky spots. For someone who hasn't gone up the ferrata before, problems start after the snowfield below it (here too I'd recommend crampons at least for the descent, even just urban ones) when looking for the path or cairns to the marked path. Easy to stray into rocks and scree.

@IgorZlodej, pic 6: yes, there is a connection from that saddle to the marked ferrata path. It was useful for me in the reverse direction when the late hour was already pressing. The path is unmarked but solidly indicated with cairns and joins from the upper station about 5-10 min before the stream crossing. So if you go up the ferrata, you can save on the cable car (10 EUR round trip, 6 EUR up only); considering this passage, the time saving is then only about 30-45 minutes.

Report follows!

Hi, planning Marmolada week 23-30.7. Anyone been up this year, conditions?
Based on conditions decide if need gondola.
Planning glacier route, is rope team mandatory or path trodden and crevasses protected?

From the question it's clear you haven't been there and talk about ropes is unnecessary. Crevasses are like every year. Especially this time. Next week up to 20 cm snow expected above 2900m
