Monte Pisimoni

rozka27. 04. 2011 00:45:08
Up the valley, down the valley, left on the road, then right, then down again.....driving on a mountain road that leads nowhere and yes, gotta get lost once, why not on the last day, hehe, so original goal scrapped and we were already rushing to Moggio-Ovedasso. We picked the barely 1880m high Monte Pisimoni and yeah, it's true not everything's about heightmežikanje...path no. 423, also called Alta Via C.A.I Moggio, all the way to the top, winding thru very steep and sheer grassy slopes, no let-up and caution's advised, cuz at 1880m we do a whopping cca. 1800m elevation gain. Thunder and drops chased us off the summit this time and since we returned along the ridge continuing to Monte Crostis, didn't hang around much. At cca. 1609m junction and we left path 423 here, joined path 450 down to valley, no plans to continue. This one's gentler but no less pretty, great views all the way. Lower in woods another junction, follow 424 to before Ovedasso where a local lady pitied us as rain picked up and drove us to our car. Loved this path, super laid out, varied and from below you just wonder where it goes...conditions yesterday (25.04.2011), some snow patches on ridge no issue, path dry...def recommend dry day, not hot! Radler "dropped" tho no plan needed today, hehevelik nasmeh

Since planning return via trail 450-424, left car in Roveredo village at ~360m and in half hour reached neighboring Ovedasso. Since been here years ago, took shortcut and higher caught trail 423 mentioned by @rozka. Trail rises steeply, not many views as whole time in pine forest, but valley noise heard fading with height. Here and there views across valley to Lopic, Javor, Amariana and of course Bela valley. Above treeline views expand, view to vertical walls impressive. Novice would say no passage, but there is nicely routed on ledges under walls partly through steep grass, end short gully to gentler grassy slopes and summit. View to nearby Grauzaria and Sernio then West Julian Alps and Zuc area mountains impressive. From summit north partly on ridge partly below to point 1609 by @rozka, there right and cross entire east slope Pisimonija to open south slopes where once pastures Breisi, Costalunga, Sacout. Sadly slope burned years ago now slowly regenerating. Trail 450 then 424 straight to Roveredo village right by our car.
Trail to Pisimoni from Bela valley one steepest, ~1500m to climb, possible cross whole ridge to Monte Crostis via Fonderis notch past old military barrack above Rio Simon valley back to valley. But very long that trail, did years ago.
as we gain height, a nice view opens to the valley of Bela - Val Fella1
Bela valley, Tam na Bili-Resiutta, Val Resartico valley and the entire ridge from Javorja to Lopiča2
the scenic promontory tempted us to admire the surrounding beauty3
under the vertical and overhanging walls there is a nice path4
Tam na Bili, also the entrance to enchanting Rezija5
a short gully brings us to gentler slopes6
Plananizza, various Joveti, Strma Peč, Špik on the ledges and Špiki, Krniška glavica also visible on the left7
on the other side wonderful Grauzaria, Sernio and both Flopa8
and of course Zuc dal Bor9
near elevation 1609, also the most difficult part of the ridge traverse10
nearby on a rock inscription Roveredo, but it's still far away11
it's hard to imagine that there were active alpine pastures high above the valley12

formerly there was probably a bivouac too, like on many abandoned pastures, now..in a pinch one could overnight14

Monte Pisimoni and Monte Crostis ... two small giants velik nasmeh. Small because neither reaches 1900m, giants because access surpasses most Triglav approaches. Good 2200m gain on whole trail and 25km nasmeh.

From village Ovedasso to Pisimoni follow 423 and good three hours nonstop knee biter like rarely eek. From there mostly ridge very scenic trail to Monte Crostis. Zuc dal Bor greets from distance and you'll arrive right under its walls. There at fork take right 425. Don't forget just before barrack turn right down hill again. Much lower in beech forest awkward but well marked branch right for 424 as one descent variant. This with incredible passages leads through really wild gorge of Rio Simon stream with tributaries and delivers you km lower than start.

Whole loop on mostly nice trails well marked. Steepness, length and exposure some places not for everyone. Described variant needs dry conditions and currently no snow anywhere (early Jan 2017).

Trail for mountain gourmets nasmeh

Start coords (parking in hollow end village) …. 46°23'59.9"N / 13°13'29.5"E

Start in the village Ovedasso, from the parking lot a few 100 meters back along the road1
The steep path does not relent from the starting point to the summit, but it is pleasant and on the sunny side2
With altitude, views open over Kanalska dolina towards Padska nižina3
When we leave the forest, the environment and character of the trail change4
The trail is exposed in places, but the passages are beautiful and unproblematic5
The trail also runs through this gully :)6
In many places you wonder where the continuation of the trail is7
Snapshot8
Across the fracture. Monte Pisimoni is behind that peak9
Most markers are yellow-red, only in some places the usual white-red10
Pisimoni11
In this direction the trail continues to Monte Crostis12
Chameleon shoes :)13
Part of the trail descends from the ridge to the slopes. Here the path is poorer due to winter avalanches14
By the path15
There are enough markers and they are well visible16
Just before the goal17
On top of Monte Crostis ... the two of us and Zuc dal Bor in the background18
In this gap (Fonderisse) the path splits19
Left bivouac, right continues path 42520
The path runs under the ridge of Zuc dal Bora21
View into the slopes above the path22
Just before the barrack we turn down and slowly enter the beech forest23
Deep in the beech forest path 424 branches off which leads along the gorge Rio Simon24
Somewhere in the middle of path 424 we encounter a trough with drinking water25
Perhaps hunting lodge, perhaps weekend cottage. Anyway very secluded26
Incredible passages lead through gullies and vertical rock formations27
From there on the path becomes a comfortable mule track28
In winter time days are shortest and despite us being fast, night was chasing us29
In the village Ovedasso we arrived just before the day took leave30
The village is small, far from traffic routes, but locals know how to make it pleasant31
Course of the circular path. It accumulates 2250 elevation gain and exactly 25 km length32

@ Bandzo … I make maps of hiked paths on excellent GPS data display site – GPS Visualizer. Link …. http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/

Procedure to make map as follows:

1. On GPS Visualizer main page in display options select *Google maps*

2. On next page select *Upload your GPS data files here*

3. Here with *Browse* find your GPX or KML file to display

4. Leave all other settings as they are or tweak them

5. When you select GPX or KML file click *Draw the map*

6. Wait a moment and a new page opens with a smaller drawn map based on Google Hybrid cartography

7. Above this map in the text bar click the underlined *View*

8. The map opens again on a new page but this time displayed across the entire screen

9. Top right where it says *Google hybrid* click the dropdown menu

10. From the map options select *Open topo map* or *Topo (4U maps)*, depending on which covers your hiked path in more detail

11. To save the map, make a screenshot of the area of interest with one of the WIN tools (e.g. Snipping tool) and save it as a jpg image

I wish you lots of success and as many hiked paths as possible nasmeh

Thanks, this sounds super, it will be used again sometime nasmeh

Actually I meant if you found some website for Italy similar to Geopedia with a hiking paths layer. Drawing marked paths would be super for Italy. velik nasmeh

Thanks and the same to you,

For Italy (and also Slovenia and the Balkans) very useful Android maps at http://www.openandromaps.org/. I use them in the Oruxmaps app on my phone.

Tested them in our Julian Alps and on Velebit. Very accurate.

This wouldn't be on ZS, as the paths on Pisimoni are marked mežikanje.

Emil, thanks for such a vivid and clear trip report. Photos wonderful, captions witty as always.
Bigger thanks for the simple and clear how-to on making a map of the hiked path. The service is surely interesting for a wider circle of portal users and mountain lovers. I tried it and it works great. Many PC pros on the portal, but no such clear guide for newbies. Thanks again, good luck on future trips. LP!

@malimiha ... this weekend I was on the nearby hill (Monte Cuzzer) and no snow was visible from Ovedassa to Pisimoni anywhere.

But I don't recommend repeating the entire route I described in one of the above posts. Currently river flows are very high and on the path from Monte Crostis through the gorge to the starting point you cross quite a few. Best time for the described loop is late autumn

Thanks bagi. It was exactly your description that attracted me to this tour. Do you think it's passable or not or what would you recommend if I go to the top? Same down? Lp miha

When size doesn't matter nasmeh. Monte Pisimoni ... small in height, but strenuous for ascent. From the foot to the top it's still one continuous slope, rewarded with excellent views far around. We headed to it from Ovedassa via path 423, continued crossing the partially snow-covered ridge towards Monte Crostis and descended somewhere in the middle via path 450. This is initially a poorly marked trail that redeems with nice views and comfortable descent on southern slopes.

Access to Monte Pisimoni is currently snow-free, small crampons recommended only for ridge continuation ( conditions early January 2019 )

Start of path 423 in the village Ovedasso1
Access runs along the southern slopes, already bathed in sunlight early on2
Also sign for *Alta Via*, or *High Path*, which continues from M. Pisimoni towards Crostis. Great thing :)3
Free translation of the inscription … *The person who vandalously stole the crucifix here is not worthy of any respect. It was placed in memory of a mountain lover who tragically lost his life in them4
Steep serpentines lead through the forest for a long time, rocks appear only in the upper third5
Views suddenly open up, first towards Tolmezzo. Attention is stolen by Amariana6
One still needs to climb over the rocky step7
Some passages are particularly attractive8
Some are really ingenious :)9
The path runs along steep slopes, but no particular exposure is felt10
Yellow / red markers belong to the *Via Alta* variant, which follows the same as the official path11
Steep ascent and wonderful views12
Monte Pisimoni is hidden behind this peak13
At the summit. Wide views open far around14
Slovenians obviously visit Pisimoni regularly15
In the foreground Monte Plananzia and Picolo Belepeit, which we visited recently16
Ridge towards Crostis, in the background Zuc dal Bor reigns17
We continued along the ridge variant to the junction for path 450. Small crampons were welcome, large ones unnecessary18
Direction slightly corrected :) Without the red corrections, many would stray into the rocks19
Steep descent to the lowest point of the ridge. There our return route branches off20
Return. Path 450, poorly trodden at the beginning, with old markers, but not exposed21
The trail reliably crosses the slopes towards the right saddle in the photo. Since the initial part is on the north side, it was icy in places22
When the path swings to the south side, it becomes more comfortable, dry and very scenic23
Dolina Bele far below us. They were descending these slopes24
Long ago there was a fire here. Some bare giants still remind of those times25
Sun and comfortable, scenic descent have brightened our day26
The former alpine pasture has some buildings converted into weekend cottages27
A bit of fun after a strenuous path :)28
Still descent through the gorge29
Here path 450 joins path 424. The crosses are not from the war, but depict the family tree. The oldest is still from the 18th century30
Further on there are many abandoned buildings of unknown origin. They could have been military rear from the first war, or abandoned pastures31
Chapel along the path dedicated to alpinists, military mountain units32
Conclusion. We deliberately left the car 2 km before Ovedass in the morning due to the circular variant.33

Monte Pisimoni and Monte Crostis, Saturday, 8.6.2019

From Ovedassa to Pisimoni, from there along the ridge to Crostis and from there descent below Zucom to Casera La Cita and further towards Roveredo. Despite markings quite wild and solitary world. No peculiarities on the path, snow patches on the path between Forcello Fonderis and Casera La Cita pose no problems. Streams below the casera are easily crossable, just need to be nimble enough, and sufficiently watery to refresh thoroughly. Ticks are no exception here either, so some spray for protection isn't superfluous. Wonderful tour!
