By train to the mountains

Print
Karletto7. 07. 2010 14:21:22
Currently I'm without a car and it pulls me to the mountains. Let's leave other options like taxi, hitchhiking etc. aside.

Which railway stations are near starting points, max. 1h walk away from starting points?

Please mention the name of the mountain the starting point leads to as well.

Thanks for the answers "nasmeh"

You know how many hikers go from all over Slovenia to Gorenjska at the end of the week. I, e.g., every Sunday, if the forecast is for the whole day without precipitation.

Not exactly towards Gorenjskajezik
To Senožeče and then to Vremščica.
or some station further and then to Slavnik.

Maybe try the bus too. I think it ran regularly over Vršič last summer. For this year I don't know, but last year I met it several times.

Hello!

For mountains: I agree with Mr. Tadej:
Bohinjska Bistrica - Crna prst
Podbrdo - Crna prst

For hills:
Kosana - Vremščica (no railway station in Senožeče, as railway doesn't go through Senožeče)
Presnica - Slavnik
Podgorje - Slavnik
Pivka - Osojnica

For more walking (than 1h to starting point):
Divača - Vremščica
Postojna - Sv. Trojica (if no exercises on military polygon)
Prestranek - Sv. Trojica (if no exercises on military polygon)
Pivka - Sv. Trojica (if no exercises on military polygon)
Postojna - Nanos
Hrpelje-Kozina - Slavnik
Rakek - Slivnica

These are routes in 'my' area, more or less tested. But even a non-pensioner would respect them. Elevation above sea level isn't everythingnasmeh.

@m I agree, there really is no station in Senožeče, I kind of forgot how I practiced like this as a student.

I think I also went to Kamnik and then to Velika Planina.

Let me refresh this topic a bit so I don't open a new one nasmeh

- Dom Andreja Žvana-Borisa na Poreznu: Podbrdo

To have the train take you to a station and then walk to a mountain in just one hour? I think there are very few such starting points in Slovenia... But you can travel nicely (and cheaply!) by train to stations that are excellent starting points for mountains... Of course the problem is that on weekends trains on certain sections run rarely or not at all. Such example is Sežana - Nova Gorica, Ljubljana - Kamnik etc... If we start in Sežana towards Ljubljana first station Povir (starting point for Stari Tabor 1.30 hours), Divača (Vremščica 3 hours), Gornje Ležeče (Vremščica 1.30 hours), Košana (Vremščica 1.30 hours, Osojnica 3 hours), Pivka (Osojnica 1 hour, Sv. Trojica 3 hours, Šilentabor or Tabor nad Knežakom 1.30 hours), Prestranek (Osojnica 2 hours, Sv. Trojica 3 hours), Postojna (Pečna Reber 1 hour, Sv. Trojica 4.30 hours, Nanos 6 hours), Rakek (Slivnica 3 hours), Planina (Planinska Gora 3 hours), Logatec (Kališče 3 hours), Verd (Pokojišče 3 hours), Borovnica (Pokojišče 3.30 hours), Preserje (Krim 3.30 hours)... From Ljubljana towards Zidani Most first station Laze (Janče 2 hours), Jevnica (Janče 1.30 hours), Kresnice (Geoss 1.30 hours), Sava (Zasavska Gora 2.30 hours), Trbovlje (Mrzlica 3 hours, Kum 4 hours), Zagorje (Kum 3.30 hours), Hrastnik (Kum 3.30 hours, Mrzlica 3.30 hours), Zidani Most (Kum 3.30 hours, Vel. Kozje 3 hours, Kopitnik 3 hours)... And towards Zagreb from station Radeče (V. Kozje 2.30 hours) Loka (Lisca 4 hours), Breg (Lisca 3.30 hours) Sevnica (Lisca 3.30 hours), Blanca (Bohor 3.30 hours) Brestanica (Bohor 3.30 hours)... And towards Maribor Rimske Toplice (Kopitnik 2.30 hours), Laško (Šmohor 2.30 hours), Celje (Celjska Koča 2.30 hours), from Štor or Šentjur to Svetina about 2.30 hours, Dolga Gora (Boč 3.30 hours), Poljčane (Boč 3 hours)... And towards Jesenice among others nice starting point Žirovnica (Stol 5 hours)... From Nova Gorica towards Jesenice Solkan (Sabotin 1.30 hours, Sv. Gora 2 hours), Plave and Kanal (Korada 3 hours), Grahovo (Rodica 5 hours), Hudajužina (Porezen 4 hours) Podbrdo (Porezen 3.30 hours, Črna Prst 3.30 hours), Bohinjska Bistrica is excellent starting point for Julian Alps...
I think Karletto has already got a car... True though that trains mostly run on weekdays, on weekends less frequently... Slovenian Railways aren't that dumb to run empty trains waiting for someone who goes to mountains by train twice a year... I did most of my trips by train a few years ago - and it was nice and still is... Greetings and enjoy your trips and mountains!

also RS Šk. Loka (Trata)-Lubnik-ca. 2 hours. For those who don't want pounding on asphalt for 2 km, from RS to Šk. Loka also local bus (0.5€) runs, synced with train.

From Sežana by train you can get to Chamonix and from station to gondola in five minutes and with it to Aiguille du Midi. From there to Mont Blanc... To Sežana from surroundings you can also get by taxi... And Šeki is quite cheap... I'd advise, better not ask stupidities...

B2 said: >>>Even at SŽ they aren't so stupid to run empty trains and wait for someone who heads to the mountains by train twice a year... <<<

Abroad, where rail and public transport is more a citizens' service than a profitable branch, they often are so 'stupid' to run trains that aren't profitable themselves but benefit many. Because there they don't just look at direct revenue in the railway till but at fewer people driving cars, less traffic, pollution, congestion, more foreign tourists and pensioners (usually without cars), accommodations will earn more,...

There you'd plan a train trip more easily than here, where for a serious full-day hike due to such miserly timetables the option drops out. In vain they then yell to be ecological and bla bla bla,... I'd gladly go by train otherwise.
