By train to the mountains

Probably you get closer to the starting points with buses, but OK, the train also runs through the Kanalska dolina (western Julian Alps and Carnic Alps from Pontebba to Trbiž). Station heights are from 700 to 800 m a.s.l. And from Nova Gorica to Sabotin, Sv.Gora or Škabrijel is probably within the posed question. Dobrač is accessible by train, the line is along the entire Ziljska dolina. From stations on the Dravograd-Maribor line there are also several trips possible on both sides.

Van Sims, I wouldn't agree with that last thought of yours.
Also here trains, buses run empty, without subsidies they'd cancel them right away.
When I remember my teenage years, we kids
e.g. went to Jalovec by bus to Rateče, then on foot to Tamar... in short we took our time.
Today most would prefer to drive 4X4 to Kotovo sedlo, up and down, at 12 they'd boast in some tavern where (we) were.
I think there are many options for organizing trips with public transport.

To sum up: for friends (mountains) you have to take time.nasmeh

No train runs on weekends on the Celje-Velenje, Maribor-Dravograd-Koroška route.eek And just on weekends we go to the mountains the most.
It's a big pity that it's like that, since trains are very suitable for combination with a bike.zavijanje z očmi

Thanks to both for info and advicemežikanje, I'll probably first attack Slavnik from Hrpelje, then sometime Snežnik too, since I've been planning it for so long, otherwise now more options since I'm at the SW end of our countryvelik nasmeh. For now looking for such mountains that are somewhat accessible from railway stationsmežikanje. E.g. I've been to Janče, went from Jevnice, down to Litijamežikanje

Hribovc88, if you're looking for destinations accessible by train, I'd recommend this. Closest to you is Vremščica, take train to Gornje Ležeče and from there 1.5 hours to the top (route description on hribi.net) Another is Kum, train to Trbovlje then to Kum (about 3 hours walk) descend to Hrastnik (about 2.5 hours) and train back. If you want a bit harder ascent, take train to Bohinjska Bistrica, go to Črna prst and descend the other side to Podbrdo, then train back. Of course check timetable first so you don't miss the return train or wait too long at station, that's it, best m nasmehnasmehnasmeh

@marchy, I already went to Vremščica from Gornje Ležeče, descended towards Pivka, it was a nice tourmežikanje, to Kum I planned on Saturday (from Trbovlje up via Čebulova dolina, down towards Zidani Most, i.e. via Škratova dolina, then by train across Savamežikanje), but unfortunately something came up. Haven't been to Črna prst yet, thanks for the ideanasmehmežikanje

Hey Hribovc88, some more destinations available by train. From Celje you can reach Celjska koča, Grmada, Srebotnik and Svetina. From Rimske Toplice you can get to Kopitnik. From Laško, Šmohor is accessible. From Zidani Most you can conquer Velika Kozja. From Poljčane, Boč is accessible. From Šentjur you get to Resevna, as you see in my area you have quite a varied choice, you can contact me if work allows I will keep you company. Best m "nasmeh"

Marchy mentioned quite a few destinations that are very interesting and we have hiked them also with a larger group of kids. Let me add one more: Zasavska Sveta gora from Sava, very nice circular hike. LP

By train to Jesenice and/or Bohinjska Bistrica, from there yippee options (e.g. bus to upper Sava valley and left or right into hills, mountains or straight from Jesenice to Pristava or Golica, from Bistrica right away path under feet to lower Bohinj range and descent to coastal side)

What are the bus connections like from Bela Krajina to Ljubljana? Because if you go by train you get down there but not back because connections are bad.

@hribovc: Just to Mirna gora hardly worth going across half Slovenia and chasing timetables at the tail. No other higher hills unfortunately in B.k.
If you want to SE end already I recommend two-day: train/bus to NM, then bus to Kostanjevica, do "royal" tour across whole Gorjanci to Trd.vrh, sleep at Gospodična, next day maybe a bit to Croatian side and back to start and home.

hribovc what about around Škofja Loka (Lubnik, Osolnik...)? From Škofja Loka there are also quite good connections to Selška dolina (Ratitovec).

Thanks GregorC, I haven't been to Lubnik yet either. Did you mean by bus from Škofja Loka? How far then do you need to go or where exactly is the starting point for Ratitovec?

From Škofja Loka by bus to Železniki or to Zale Log.
You can do a circular tour. From Zale Log to Ratitovec on this path
http://www.hribi.net/izlet/zali_log_krekova_koca_na_ratitovcu_/21/147/2490
Descend to Prtovč and then on to Železniki by road. Almost certainly you'll get a ride from Prtovč to Železniki.
