Ceria Merlone

There are several marked trails. One to planina Krni Dol, then to planina Larice and Pecol. All planinas are connected by a road closed to public traffic. Best option is parking halfway on the road Na Žlebeh - Pecol, my last described variant.

Why start in the valley; I prefer starting from the pass V Žlebeh-S Nevea. Trail start is marked at the big parking right under the ski slope. Last time (early this month) the first car from planina Pecol stopped for me to go back down. And on foot via planina Larice isn't that terribly far, of course if you decide for walking back. But you can count on fewer cars up on Saturday and thus fewer hitchhiking chances.
Good luck and steady step

Thanks for replies. nasmeh
Somehow leaning towards mirank's variant.

Starting point meant that a bit lower, where the trail to Pecol turns sharply right at the left bend?

@mirank, my variant is 300 elevation meters higher than you suggest zavijanje z očmi

I believe it's true, but haven't tried that variant yet. Definitely less walking if you go all the way on foot! Anyway, the starting point I suggested is 100m BEFORE the junction to Pecol-Altopiano del Montasio.

On Saturday I walked the whole Ceria Merlone from Nevejski Pass up over Scalini saddle, over Škrbina Prednje Špranje and circularly down past Brazza and over planina Larice. Really looong looong tour. But unforgettable and worth every effort..nasmeh

The path is without special features, I'll mention some novelties regarding the Luca Vuerich bivouac on the Špik above the nose. First, a slightly fluffy chamois with an injured front paw is wandering around the bivouac. It's very happy for a pinch of salt and water. Let's help it survive.
Secondly, they built a WC bowl in typical Italian style with a slot in front, this time also in the back velik nasmeh. It's dimensioned generously so every ass fits on it zavijanje z očmi. According to the logbook, the bivouac has a visitor almost every day. In the future, reservations will probably be desired because unfortunately the Czechs discovered it too jezen.
Planina Krni dol is closed so don't count on any hoppy refreshment ....

Yesterday we went on this path.
We started at Pecol and along the road past planina Krni dol and over sedlo Scalini to Škrbina prednje špranje. From the škrbina towards Vrh Krnega dola there was some snow on the ledges that could be crossed without winter gear. Further on the ledges it was dry, only around Špik nad nosom and on the descent to Škrbina na tratici there was some snow, which however melted properly in the afternoon. From the saddle we descended directly to the hut.
Now are the right days for this path.velik nasmeh

Yesterday we walked the entire Ceria Merlone. Very little snow, in some gully, none on the ledges. We didn't use crampons, took ice axe in hand only on some shorter sections. Still, great caution is needed on sections where rocks are just sprinkled with snow / partially icy.

27.8.2016 walked Ceria Merlone, which is truly a path for the soul... Beautiful crossing of the Poliska Špiki with beautiful views. Protections (cables) dosed just right, the path allows some scrambling and enjoying the rock. Whoever expects a path equipped with taut cables and numerous pegs and brackets (there are none on the path), better not venture onto it.

Definitely agree with T. Mihelič who marked the path as "an inevitable duty tour for every true lover of the Julian Alps)".

How is it on the Ceria Merlone path? Is it passable without winter gear? Thanks.

Like this at first glance I'd say yes!

On Sunday from Nabojs Montaževa north face was dry, same Viševa, in Gola NE some patches. The ridge back from Montaž to Viš looked dry from the north side.

In 2014, that summer when snow lingered where it usually melts, even late July and August, the Corsi hut warden once in early August told me that Ceria Merlone was snow-free.

Just in case call there. The warden spoke English then.

On Ceria Merlone, Leva path dry. From bivak Suringar towards Amalia some little snow that can be bypassed. Gola Nordest na Vis has some snow in the gully at 2200m height, which shouldn't pose problems, at least not for us. Checked 01.07
Good luck

This is how the Forca de lis sieris saddle looked before entering the climbing section on Špik nad Nosom on 19.6.2017. Only the lower snowfield had to be crossed, which wasn't difficult, the path ahead moves away from the snow.

This year the weather is fully shaping our route choices and this time was no different. Heavy fog around the two-thousanders drove us higher, this time to the often-walked but always wonderful Merlonka smile.

We ascended towards Špik hude police, descended via the old now-marked mule track directly to the abandoned Planina Krni dol. The whole path is passable without crampons and ice axe. Some remnants of snow drifts can be safely bypassed. All protections are in solid condition, the ibexes are posing for the sun and cameras big.

The morning on Montaž planina was not the most encouraging, only the Italian forecast promised sun at higher elevations1
We set off in the direction of Špik hude police, intending to descend to planina Krni dol2
FVG Meteo is great, they were right. The blueness of the sky stretched our mouths to our ears :)3
Horned chamois females and offspring, as is usual for Špik hude police. Big males are hard to encounter here4

For those who haven't been here yet ... Ceria Merlone is a WW1 path, comfortable as can be, scenic, yet demanding10

No worries, the snow field in the background is off the path.13

Towards Špik nad nosom15
One of the more attractive bivouacs ... Luca Vuerich. It is extremely ingeniously equipped and constantly maintained.16
This is missing from our bivouacs, especially in Slavic languages. Rules of good behavior and cleanliness.17
Versatile alpinist Luca Vuerich, passed away in our Prisanku. The bivouac is dedicated to him.18
We continue in the direction of Špik nad Špranjo.19
The path is exposed but very scenic.20
View back at the Luca Vuerich bivouac.21
First serious snow field, which is easily bypassed through the extreme poč.22

Finally, Zajzera has also opened up.24
The Western Juijci are wonderful mountains.25
Second snow field, which also poses no problems.26
All steel cables except one are in good condition.27
The midday sun occasionally drove the mists towards us too.28
Looks tricky, but nothing special. For the inexperienced, the SVK on this path is certainly welcome.29
The path from the Corsi hut towards Škrbine, Koštrunovi or Merlonke is partially still under snow.30
It was so nice that we added a little detour off the path :). Our last summit this time.31
Opaaaa, hornets on the horizon.32

Descent along the marked mule track to the Krni dol pasture. This path is not part of the official markings and was not marked until recently.34

Walking time probably around 10-11 hours?

@djimuzl ... not that much. We did it in 8 hours with extras included. Timetables are always tricky though, since everyone has their own pace. Better to plan more than too little smile.
We really hit the weather perfectly, fog occasionally provided shade but also mugginess. Still we were beaming with satisfaction big
